Big Black Varmints

In two months of baiting, this is the only time he has been in during the day time.

The other two times was during the night.

So what do you guys think? Should I use the .17 on him or step up to the .20?

Go with the big bore .20 with a well constructed bullet ::) That actually looks like a good size bear! Ears look small and on the side if the head, if he reminds you of a fat man at the buffet, he is a shooter!!!

It is hard to see in this pic, but his belly is hanging down and almost touches the ground.

"fat man at a buffet" Good one Glen.

I am quite sure this guy will make the book in Wisconsin. I am just wondering how well he would score.

As always, he didn't get that big by being stupid. Doubt he will show up during season.

As far as I am concerned books are over rated and measurements just complicate matters. Good times and great stories are how I measure any hunt, successful or not. I got skunked this last spring but my buddy got one that squared right at 7', gonna make one hell of a "Love Rug". And I had a blast regardless, good times, and one great story! Up here bears really start moving around in the evenings, just a thought for your hunt, good luck! :)

That's my opinion also Larry.

I don't have a kill permit, so a buddy that does is going to be sitting on the bait.

There are actually 11 different bear that have visited the bait. No wonder I don't have any deer on my land.

I found two fawn remains this spring that consisted of nothing more than a small piece of the hind leg. It's hard to justify the cost and work involved with food plots when this is what I am up against.

Hence the varmint classification.

Jim

Shoo him across the border to Michigan & we'll help you out with that issue. Black bear are EXTREMELY hard on fawns. Probably much worse than coyotes.
I'm surprised that you have that many other bear that will get close to that bad boy. Usually when they get that large, it' becomes a 1 bear bait, everything else doesn't want to be a meal.

Other thing is he's moving in the daylight. VERY critical, make sure that you keep all intrusion to a very minimum. Absolutely no small game hunting around the area. Good luck, post a pic of the dead critter.

Hi again Larry,

You would think he would have everything run out of the country, but that is not the case.

In fact, there is one sow with two cubs from last year and a sow with three cubs from this year that visit the bait almost every day.

I think he is the definition of "rogue bear". So far, in two and a half months of baiting with a camera he has only showed up three times. Two in the middle of the night, and one in the day time. 20 years ago when I was baiting and guiding bear hunters, we would call him a "runner". Its a bear that comes walking quickly into the bait, takes a few mouthfulls, and then moves on rapidly. He will not spend any time at the bait.

The hunter and I have talked at length about him, and we came to the conclusion we can't focus on him showing up during season. There are two other boars and one is a solid 400+ bear. Of course, anything can happen, but we aren't hanging our hats on this guy, so to speak.

The sitters have the first week this year, and then the dogs start running the bear all over the place. Realistically, for the sitters, it is a one week season.

Yes Jim,
You are absolutely correct, a 1 week season basically. 3 hits in 2 1/2 months makes a VERY large teritory for that boy. It could be worse though, you could be in Michigan where they open small game season 5 days ahead of a 7 day bear season & throw in a youth deer hunt to boot. Nobody tromping around then spooking the bears that you've worked on for 2 months! :-\

Wow thought us Pa guys were the only ones who have these issues. Try hunting a big buck all archery season and then when the rut starts coming in you have squirrel hunters firing up in the trees at squirrels, turkey hunters with rifles, pheasant, grouse hunters, and rabbit hunters running beagles. I just dont feel safe in a tree anymore this time of year.

You're safe. Non of them are using semi auto squirrel assault rifles :)
