Beware of this scammer!!! :(

I received an e-mail from a "Joan" indicating that he\she had a NF scope that I've been looking for. I e-mailed back and said for them to give me a call, and we'd discuss it. When he called it sounded like an accent I've never heard before, and he was having trouble with basic grammar and said his name was (phonetically) Juh-wan. He said he wanted $950 for it, which is another red flag, as it's worth about $12-1400! In our conversation I asked him to send a photo of it. I imagine now he's looking around on the internet for a photo he can copy. His phone number is (912) 295 4187; I Googled it and found a forum where a gentleman was indicating the same experience! I just wanted to get this out there so none of you will get suckered in (as if you would with all the red flags!). Or......maybe you'll mess with him like I will!

These Nightforce Scams really seem to be popular just around, at or before Christmas time. And like you mentioned the most obvious give a way is the really low price.

Timely Update!! I just received an e-mail from "Joan" with four photos of the scope. I'd like to post the pics here, but I just got a new computer and am unsure about a few things, so I could forward that e-mail to someone who could post them here, and that might be interesting and informative.

I thought of that, but that's probably why he asked where I was early in our conversation! I haven't heard from him for a little while; perhaps he discovered this thread!

Steve, it is really easy to spoof or fake a telephone number. He likely got your email off your signature on this or another forum. You really should hide that. PM me if you really want to post up those photos :)

Good point, Delfuego! I've always tried to be extremely forthright in forums like this where the general populace is so honest, especially when we were building a lot of stocks. However.....I have to keep reminding myself there are lots of bottom-feeders out there to prey on you!!

If he hasnt figured out that you know its a scam get his address.
I would then call the local Police department in that area (if he is actually in GA) and pass along all the pertinent information including photos and where they originated etc.
You might just save someone else the disgust of being scammed.

If I am leary of a seller I too always ask for a new photo with something specific in it. I had a guy try to scam me that said he was at an address less than 16 miles from me and he clammed up and went away, when I said I would be happy to come inspect the offer and would have cash with me.

I had someone try to scam me on something I was selling. It was pretty obvious since the purchaser lived an hour away and the check they mailed was from Texas. The scam at that time is that they would make a "mistake" on the amount paid and ask for you to send back the overage. Their check would be bad and they hoped you would get the refund to them in time for them to cash the check before you found out their check was fraudulent.

I used the Sheriff Department's mailing address as if it was my own and they sent the check with a tracking number. I never heard any more from them and it was great to scam a scammer.

I guess Mr. Scammer hasn't been reading these threads! I just called him to see where he was located, and now he says, "Virginia"! I couldn't understand what town he said, so I told him to e-mail it to me. I need to be off here for a while.......so we'll see later!

My wife gets calls every once in a while.. They all have US numbers .. or so it seems.. I looked up a few area codes and land sake. They didn't exist. Scammers can generate a fake area code these days so a guy has no idea where the call really originates from..
