Best value for a AR-15

Im looking to buy a new rifle. I don't know a lot about the semi-auto rifles. Im looking to use it for target shooting and hunting Texas hogs or other small game. I am not looking to spend a lot of money but want a quality rifle. I am not set on one brand. I have looked at the Smith & Wesson M&P Sport. If yall have any recommendations they are all welcome.

Thank you.

I like my DPMS Oracle. Good price and not bad accuracy. Plan on replacing the trigger in any lower priced AR as they are absolute junk.

Best value? Mildly used.

I don't know what it looks like where you live, but around here the shelves are full of used AR15s at big discounts. It seems as though the panic of that last few years has subsided.

I'd bet with a very small amount of effort you could find a little used rifle from any of the brands mentioned for a cheap price.

Remember that for accuracy, the only things that really matter are the upper and the trigger, and you can replace those.

ps - I would add Rock River Arms, and Stag to your list of brands to choose from.

Got my wife a base model DPMS to plink with, shoot coyotes etc. Turns out with a cheap 4x scope it will hold honest MOA groups at 100, and can make hits on gongs out to 300 until it gets boring. Have shot it out to 600 and it does a lot better than you might think. Don't know what your expectations are but this one sure surprised me.

Thank you. And the longest range I would be shooting would be like 100-200 yrds.

I probably don't know much more about ARs than you and I have assembled a number of them "on the cheap" by looking for specials, purchasing cosmetic blem uppers/lowers, etc. Have $80 barrels that shoot less than MOA. As mentioned before, the trigger can make the largest difference. Short of rolling your own, buying used and changing the trigger is an option.

Hogs can be tough to bring down with a .223. Select a good bullet and go for the head shot.

I'd buy an AR-15 in 5.56 NATO

I live and hunt in Texas. Lots of places DO NOT allow 223 for hogs .... for a reason. I have AR's and AK 74s but my 30-30 goes on hog hunts.

At those ranges I think you could spend exponentially more money for miniscule, if any accuracy improvements. Have fired everything from cheap steel ammo to well prepped handloads through this rifle, never a jam, an fte, an ftf etc, absolutely 0 problems. Even shot some tracers through it for fun one time, it was a blast to see them arcing to the 600 yard line.

I'd like to suggest going to Rock River Arms and go thru their site . Some of their models guarentee 3/4 MOA and mine do significantly better especially with handloads . A relatively inexpensive addition is their 2-stage NM trigger which is well worth it or the Geissele (sp) trigger which is superb .

The cool thing about the A/R's are their adaptability, so far as reconfiguring them to meet your needs. The Smith & Wesson or any of a lot of those mentioned by others will do well. If and when you opt to upgrade, you can then simply swap out the barrel, put on a free-float handguard, upgrade the trigger, etc. . Do be sure .223's are allowed for hog hunting where you live. You can get another upper in a larger caliber such as 6.5 Grendel and still shoot factory ammo if you don't reload.
