Best tool to hold upper for AR308 Ar10 etc barrel installs.

With ar15's you can use several good tools out there to prevent torque on the upper. With AR10 AR308 type rifles not as many around. I am just testing the waters on what works and what will not. Clamp upper in patted vise using rail and bottom, clamp barrel in barrel vise etc. Send me your ideas... Thanks, Matt

They make the clam shell type upper vice blocks, those work well. They fit around your upper receiver and give you a solid surface to clamp in your vice without damaging your upper. I have one for both AR15s and AR308s, and they have served me very well for many barrel changes.

I think I got mine from brownells a few years ago. If you cant find one of those I know that there are rail mounted ones as well. Slides onto the flat top rail and clamps in place.

I have the armorer's block you chuck in your vise with front and rear action lug relief slots. Really need to clamp the flat-top to the vise or be adept at one-handed barrel installation or removal.

What about using your barrel vise? The barrel extension has the locator pin that fits the slot in the barrel nut threads... Have used this method for A-2 receiver installs. Works fine....

The barrel vise should work well glad you woke me up. The locator pin should be more than sufficient to not twist. I am still gonna find a block just to hold the upper but to torque barrels the barrel vise will be better. Thanks for all the replies guys, Matt
