Best Stock Grip For Shooting Off Bench (not free recoil)?

It is hard not to move the other fingers when pulling the trigger, especially when the pull weight is in the AR range. Having the full hand gripping increases the chance that the rifle will be torqued as the trigger is pulled. Position shooting is entirely different with regard to cheek contact than bench. Any time that I am not shooting from a bench, I want some contact. For bench shooting hand comfort is not really a priority. I want the trigger pull to be correct, and if that mandates an awkward hand position then so be it. It all about what happens at the target. While I am at it, even though you are holding a rifle, the bag stock interface needs to be smooth. allowing a consistent slide and break away as the slide starts. Highly textured and quad Picatinny forends are not desirable at all for bag contact. Either a different forend needs to be fitted for bag work, or some sort of adapter. The same is true of the butt, where too much of a toe angle can also be a problem. Sling fittings should not contact either bag at any point in aiming or firing. Of course your results on the target are the final authority in all of this. Do what works the best for you.

Your comments on cheek pressure really surprises me. Is this because you feel having your cheek on the stock is a detriment to accuracy?

When I think about this it's makes sense. If my right cheek is putting pressure against the top left of the buttstock in a rightward/downward way, then upon the recoil event the muzzle of the rifle could tend to be thrown to the left and up from that pressure......if that makes any sense.

My Grandson shoots a AR off the bench and the gun has a heavy weight pull .
He shoulders it and uses both trigger fingers one on each hand . Larry

Boyd,

Thank you. Based on your comments, I think I have a few things on my AR that help out. One is the trigger, which is a 2 stage Geissele. As adjusted and measured on my Lyman digital trigger pull gauge, it is right at 2 lbs. on the first stage, and 8 oz on the second stage. A very experienced BR competitor shot the rifle and said "don't do anything with the trigger". Not a 2 oz. BR trigger, but nothing like a standard AR trigger! With my limited shooting ranges, shooting off a bench is about all I can do.

Totally with you on the bag sliding ease. When I use a mechanical front rest and heavy rear bag, I outfit the AR with the products as shown in the attached pics. The pics came from 6mmar.com. These allow easy movement of my AR in the bags with minimal stiction, although I think that can still be improved. I am trying out the use of some slick tape that is used sometimes on wood drawers, etc.

All sling fittings are removed. I have a level on the gun to ensure it is level when firing.

Thanks for your tips. Very helpful!

Phil

Drier sheets are wonderful for removing friction from lots of things. I used them on my powder funnel to stop any powder granules from sticking. Also if storing anything with any kind of stuffing or material, leaving a few drier sheets in will repel mice and who know what else.
