Best stock for offhand/silhouette?

Local club is talking about setting up a scaled down silhouette type comp. I haven't done much offhand shooting but like the idea.

What type of stocks are used in this discipline?

Sporter style, monte carlo?

Thanks, Matt.

From what I've seen, they are a bit of a different beast, high comb off set forend to butt, to the point they almost look crooked.
Contact Doan Trevor and have him make you something.

I won the WY state HP hunter rifle silhouette match two times back in '02 and '05 using a box stock Ruger 77R. It was a 7x57 back then wearing a Leupold 6.5-20x with target turrets. Load was 150gr. SMK with RL15 on all four targets. Today, that shot out barrel has been replaced with a Rem. 7mm-08 takeoff barrel and wears a fixed Leupold 12x. It's a medium size game hunting rifle now. I'd set it up like before and use it again in 7-08 for the upcoming July match in Lander.

Put your money into a good repeatable scope, worry about a stock later.

The stock will likely not be the limiter. You didn't say centerfire or smallbore, but since it is scaled down I am assuming highpower.

Most competitors use custom type stocks, but a sporter/monte carlo style would be fine. I shot my first season using an ambidextrous manners hunting stock.

McMillan has a newer M-T Hunter that Mark Pharr (silhouette shooter/gunsmith) helped design. It is more of a cross between a hunting and full blown silhouette stock with a slightly lower comb silhouette stock, but it is only flat top and you need to ask about it.

Anschutz Precise. Have your action put into the stock. Has more adjustments than you will ever understand (or need).

Mark Pharr's website.

I obtained a walnut copy from Treebone caving who was making them for Mark if I remember correctly.

I don't currently shoot Silhouette but moving from a Brown Precision Silhouette to a Pharr Silhouette stock was worth around four to five extra animals per 40 shot bank it was that good. That was smallbore with an Anschutz 1712. Just made the rifle so much easier to shoot.

Evelio macdonald also has a line of stocks he offers. Not sure what all inlets he can do but i got one for a 54ms and it added animals on my tally. Its like it has a built in rest

Lastly from me, ask all the questions you want about the metallic silhouette game. There are many of us on this site and the other one, SC, with many years of experience that can answer ANY questions regarding equipment, rules, range protocol, etc. We know silhouette.

We would be glad to help you get addicted to our favorite shooting sport. :)

Stock selection I cant tell you what YOU might like best, comes down to cheek weld. But, I would like to offer this, learn, and I mean learn well how to use a sling Marine Corps Style for off hand. My rifle club bans the use of slings in our competition shoots because "it gives you Marines too much advantage" over other shooters. Disagree? Look at Olympic competitors!

EvanB, I do agree with your thoughts about sling use giving one the ability to stand and hold steady on target. I have used that method many times in the past.

However, the use of slings in rifle silhouette competition is not allowed per NRA rules. I have been shooting this discipline long enough that I can hold much steadier without the tension constraints a sling induces on my frame and muscles.

If mattri wants to shoot the game as intended he will develop the correct rifle hold for him. With lots of dry fire practice and actual trigger time on the range he will become a good offhand rifle shooter.

These two stocks would be my entries for desirable silhouette off hand stocks. Solid black walnut, with deep perch bellies (NRA legal palm rests!), 29" OAL, adjustable LOPs down to 9", high cheek pieces with 6-degree castoffs off the butt toe. In-letted for post-64 Model 70s. Whittled them out for my body conformation for use in NRA HP.

Patterned off a Cloward "perch belly" prone stock.

Which class will those work in?

For official NRA silhouette, no forend below 2" from centerline of bore, so those stocks would not be legal. Silhouette needs an any class, so you can use 1 highpower rifle in multiple NRA disciplines

I use stocks made by Steve Wooster in Washington state, I will upload a picture in a bit
