Best sizing die $$$ can buy ?

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
For 224 Valkyrie?

Good with my seating die (L. E. Wilson)

Want to get as consistent neck i.d. / tension as possible.

Thx.

Fireform cases at least twice in your chamber and then uniform your cases and turn the necks the most accurately way possible and then send 4 fired case to Neil Jones. You'll have to wait about 6 months but he is the best. Probably about $250 for full length bump die with micrometer adjustments. Get the best and cry only once!

The Best

Measure your fired cases
Spec out and order a sizing reamer, make it undersize!
Purchase a lathe and some tooling
Buy a couple Newlon die blanks
Ream, then sand and polish the die to get the exact amount of sizing you want, use wooden dowels and bore mops.
Send die off to be black nitride coated. So slick you hardly need lube.

I think I can get the accuracy I want thru a good sizing die without getting into neck turning. I wanna try it, at least.

Just a personal choice.

Getting the accuracy you want is really what it all boils down to and where we see all divergence in viewpoints. :D

I'm looking for 0.35" at 100 yd, staying sub moa to 1000.

I'll see if I can get that with a good sizing die, first.

If not, then I'll try other stuff.

Question for the OP: What sort of rifle do you have and what are your accuracy requirements? What you have done is come on a site that is all about the ultimate in accuracy, the sort that the top level of competition requires, and asked about the ultimate in sizing dies and then turned around and indicated that your accuracy requirement and intentions for another part of your reloading procedure may not be at the highest level. Let's back up and start from what I asked about. Then we can give you appropriate advice.

Like boyd is saying you want consistent neck tension but dont want to turn the necks- bite the bullet and turn the necks. Its not that big of a deal and thatll eliminate one variable. So youre wanting to take a 22 caliber in an AR to .35” at 100 and still be under moa at 1000? You definitely like a challenge!

Some background....

Using virgin, unsized brass. When loading I notice significant difference in pressure required to seat bullets.

In my 6.5 CM, using 1x fired brass, I get a much more consistent seating pressure, and the accuracy I want... 0.35 - 0.38" and good at distance.

OK. I was probably composing my previous post while you posted just above it. In any case, since the sort of accuracy you are looking for has been accomplished with bushing dies, and your rifle build indicates a generous shooting budget, I suggest a custom die, with one reservation, that it can be used with an expander ball. The reason that I say this is your wanting to try unturned brass. If you only size from the outside unevenness in neck thickness will make the the ID of the case neck inconsistent, but if you coordinate bushing and expander size you you can have a setup that will only expand .001 which will even out the necks' IDs and still not create enough pull to spoil case straightness. (Of course you will want to lube neck IDs for this, and remove the lube after sizing.)Then, if you want to try turning, and sizing without the expander you have that option. Whidden offers expander ball kits in incremental diameters so you can play with that as well as bushing sizes. I would check with them for what sort of fired cases they want.

Beyond the die. I can see a couple of things that might cause some inconsistency. I may be wrong but your stock seems to be of the folding variety, and if the joint is totally rigid I suppose that that is not an issue, but if there is motion that may be too small to feel, it will affect your accuracy. The other issue that I am not sure about is the part of the stock that will be on your rear bag. Another issue that is common is a lack of wind flags when doing accuracy evaluations. I don't know if you have them, but if not, you might consider that they allow you to minimize the effect of one important variable when testing.
