Best Savage prefit??

Ok guys im looking to rebarrel a Savage model 12. I would like to do a Savage prefit in 243 win.I was thinking 27"-29". I am pondering the idea of shooting 115's. Any input on proven success. Which barrel maker should i look the hardest at.What twist have you guys had the best performance with on the 115's ?

I've had good luck with Shilen (243, 308), Lothar Walther (6br - the most accurate so far), and Douglas (SSS 22BR). I've also heard very good things about Criterion (Krieger buttoned barrels) and Brux (SSS).

-- I think if you stick with a top name, you can't go wrong. Right now it sounds like Criterion is the hot ticket. Alot of them are in the same price range (300ish). I think my next one would be a Criterion fwiw. There are lots more than those to choose from though. You'll have to see who has the length and twist that you want as you may need a 7.5 for the 115 grainers.

Sorry I can't comment on the 115's. I have never tried them but would like to. My 243 is an 8 twist and shoots the 105-108's really good so I've never tried the 115's. If I could get just 50 or so of them I may try them but haven't looked too hard yet.

I'm not sure you can get a 6mm Criterion barrel with faster than an 8 twist (IIRC, 8 twist is marginal for 115s)...but Jim Briggs @ NSS could tell you for certain.

Pac-Nor is another good option to those previously mentioned.

Mid-Way caries a 243 Shilen with an 8 twist. I bought 1 and put about 15 rounds through it. I really was not trying to find a good load or anything as I just wanted to put a few rounds down the tube befor I ream it out to 6-284, but with the ammo I had laying around it seem to shoot well.

I used an 8 twist 28" Lothar Walther prefit on my model 12 in .243 and really like it so far but I am only running 107 SMK's and lighter. Can't say how it would do with 115's.

Benchmark, hands down.

My last one shot 3/8" groups at 300 yards. I can't recommend them enough.

I hear that there is a guy doing prefit Brux barrels. What is the optimum twist for the 115's?

Fred Moreo @ sharp shooters supply is chambering Brux barrels for savage pre-fits. McGowen makes a good Savage prefit too. My .243 McGowen shoots extremely well. Its a 12tw and "does" stabilize the 87gr VMax !

Dave, SSS is pretty loose on their timelines. I just got an action back from them that they said would be 2 weeks ended up being almost 3 months.

I love my Benchmark Prefit in 6 br. I would recommend them but also the Criterion barrels are about $100 bucks cheaper if they make the 7.5 twist.

What is the true expected wait time from SSS to time and true a target action and chamber a brux barrel.

When SSS goes well, it goes very well and when it goes poorly it is almost impossible to resolve.

I don't know about the barrel but I sent my action in mid November and got it back 2 weeks ago. I was told "a couple of weeks".

My first choice has been Pac Nor....the wait is worth the product...Currently have the following P-N tubes set up & running..all on s/shot Savage...except the 358 Win
20 VT....20 Practical...223 AI....6BR...6XC....260 AI....6.5x55..
358 Win and waiting now for my 20 BR w/9 twist....
The barrels you buy from Midway (A&B) are only one notch above the factory Savage tube...Jim Briggs has a nice selection of prefits...throating may be 'run of the mill'....C/S will be better from Briggs than SSS in Delphos Ohio....but its hard to beat what Pac Nor offers in twists/calibers/contours....you order it..they build it to your specs......just don't be in a hurry...10 weeks & waiting for the 20 BR pre fit Savage tube.....

You are going to love that 20br with a 9tw. Shoots 39's to 55's very well and fast.

I have a few barrels from Shilen and Benchmark that are fantastic shooters. Never tried any of the others.

I really like the PacNors. For the 115 I recommend 7 to 8 inch twist. Those VLDs are getting pretty long.

I had a Mcgowen in a 8 twist 6br. It was a good shooter, and always cleaned good. I know it's not a 6mm but I just got done shooting a new Criterion 22-250AI 8 twist and it is impressing me. Shot 3 5 shot groups at 100yd with a little wind, .39", .25", .3". These are fireforming loads with 75amax out of a repeater action, varmint contour, with a HS precision stock that is just like the LRPV stock. I will be buying more of them as "needed".

Best Savage Pre-Fit: ? I'm not sure, I know that dosen't help. My next Pre-Fit's will be Criterion's from Jim Briggs, just to give them a try because of all the good I see, hear, and read.
For best results a 1-7.5 twist is recomended, 7.8 is supposed to be minimum for a 115 Dtac. My experience with 1-8's are good at shortrange, ok at midrange, and less then satisfactory at longrange. It will be hard to find a pre-fit faster then 1-8, but if you do let us know. If you choose to use a 1-8 twist you will have to push it really hard and barrel life will take a dump.

Also, supposedly some button-rifled barrels aren't "pure" 8 twists and that is often the cause of issues.

So what exactly are you suggesting? Imhearing a 7 1/2
