Best quality AR15 magazines???

I need to purchase a few 10 round mags for my ar15. I use the rifle for NRA high power matches and according to new CA law I am unable to own anything more than 10 rounds. I prefer the original aluminum military style magazines. Quality of build and functionality are of primary importance. No plastic magazines. Thanks for all your help!

Does the new edict allow you to block the follower to limit the capacity of your current magazines? Or put a spacer under the spring. I would guess not, that would make too much sense!

You asked for the best quality and then say no "plastic". You may want to rethink your opinion of "plastic".

Some are better than others. None of them would I say are the best. If you throw them on the ground and step on them sure they are better than aluminum.

I like the pmag but they do not like being fully loaded and sitting in a trunk of a car in the summer or the cold of a ND winter. Aluminum magazines handle this kind of abuse where synthetic mags just do not.

I've used a bunch of different magazines over the years, but I prefer Armalite. They work and seem more than robust for my use.

For metal mags I prefer NHMTG mags but normally use p mags and have never had a problem with either...

Both brands available at 44mag.com , don't let the name fool ya they have great deals... I have ordered from them and not had a problem...

Just looked and they have the okay brand 10 rounders for 12.95 and free shipping..
I have not used this brand though just fyi....

You might want to try ASC stainless to get a little extra seating depth (2.3+"). I have some older AR Stoner/ C Products stainless mags, they also allow 2.3" seating.

I have not had any issues with PMAGs or C-Products magazines ever, seen a lot of the other fail, jam, etc. Not sure why you don't like PMAGs, they are always my go-to.
If you want the nicest magazine get the HK steel mags. At $85 each they better be nice.
You might be able to get "10 round limiters" for magazines to make them CA compliant.

This is almost a 10 year old article...

I bought 6 of the ASC mags. Only 2 would allow a 2.300" COL all the way to the bottom. I had to modify the others. Try at your own risk but what worked for me was to place them in a large bench vise and slightly squeeze them from the side. Just a light touch! It bowed them just enough go get the necessary internal clearance.

One mag that will is the Korean H&K knockoffs. They is only one layer of metal on the front and back, not a double layer folded over and spot welded. These still need a bit of work. My Federal brass catches on one of the ridges in the side and was causing jams. Funny because the H&K mage are identical and are suppose to be some of the best. I had to go inside and flatten the top with a flat nose punch.

A lot of these mags will take a longer round at the top but they stick part way down. Take the base plate off, place 3-4 rounds in, and move the follower up and down the entire length using the spring out of the bottom.

Something else that will help all AK mags is to radius the inside lip where the bullet rides up and over.

With the new CA laws it looks like you will be very limited on what you can use. I have a lot of experience with AR related stuff. Magazines from all manufactures will perform well and not so well. Key to finding what you want "Quality of build and functionality are of primary importance" are to buy the amount you need of a certain brand/style and train with them over and over. If they display reliability issues toss them. If not have confidence in them.

I have had the best performance with the old GI mags. Not all but most. The ones that I use, I've had for years. I take good care of them and they have performed flawlessly. PMAGs are out since you don't want plastic. Some folks stated above that the HK steel mags are the best. My experience doesn't match the statements above.

Good luck with your search and good shooting.
