Best precision rifle for a new-bee?

I'm on the internet. Knew someone that "knows everything" would be so kind as to help a new guy in the game. Thanks

I don't own a 6 Creedmoor and know very little about it but took me 10 seconds to find it. You don't need to "know everything" to do a google search and find one cartridge will take about 20 grains more powder than the other. Next time I will just keep my mouth shut.....good luck on your venture!

i could very well have done that search too, however i thought maybe some guys would have a discussion and more insight then what is posted on those other sites. Not trying to be a d*ck man. I'm just EXTREMELY new to this and i'm having a tough time catching up on all the info i've been reading on here.

Hello All,
I grew up with a decent pellet rifle and Remington 22LR my grandfather gave me, both of which I shot quite a bit and became (what I thought) a relatively good shot. However, upon recently going shooting with some family and friends, I am feeling the need to get back into it with something a bit larger than my 22LR. I'd like to be able to shoot as accurately as possible at distances probably in the 100-500 meter range.

I'd like to keep it below $1000 and preferably around $700 if possible (is it realistic to, assuming I am a decent shot with a little practice, be seeing 3" or less groups from 300 meters?)
I suppose I am really asking two questions:
1) What caliber ammunition is both extremely accurate and yet something that won't break the bank (I am capable of hand loading my own rounds). I've read 6.5 x 284 NORMA is very good for this sort of thing?
2) What model rifles will both last a relatively very long time and provide the highest degree of precision and accuracy? I've read Savage arms makes high quality products at attainable prices?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Phillip
Hard to beat the 308 to begin your journey. Easy to shoot, easy to load and easy on the pocket book. Moving past that, the 6 br is another perfect round for your needs. You'll probably need to reload once you move into that cartridge but again another easy to shoot, load and on the bank. Could even simply replace the 308 barrel on that platform with the 6BR when or if interested. Saves some doe. Both chambers are made by a decent manufacturer. Accurate as well. Good luck.

Go with a 6br. Find a Savage rifle in 308, 243, 270, 30-06, and buy an after market barrel in 6br. The case base for the 6br is the same diameter as the above cases. Preferably a Savage with the "red" precision trigger. New rifles can be found for about $1,000 and used for less. A set of "go-no go" gauges and a Savage barrel wrench will allow you to easily change barrels and a Weaver T36 or T24 series scope, EGW picatinny scope base, Burris Signature rings, reloading die set, small rifle primers, are pretty much required. You can also buy a Savage in 223 as the heavier 223 bullets shoot very well out past 500m. Load data for 6br & 223 target loads are available on this site. If you can find every thing listed for under $1300 more power to you. I bought a Savage 6br with a bench rest stock and after market barrel from this site for $1000 and consider this one of my best purchases.

You can also go on the web and look what Bob White has for sale at "The Shooters Corner". He will be happy to talk with you on the phone about any of the rifles that he has for sale used. I stop in his shop often and he has been a great help and supplier.

Buy used. Put up a "want to buy" ad. You might get a much nicer rifle for your budget. Any one of a handful of cartridges will perform wonderfully for your stated goal.

I am not a fan of the Mattel/Toys 'R Us style of rifle, hence the Ruger Precision is not on my list of gotta haves.
My vote is for a traditional Savage or Remington in 6.5 Creedmoor. I have yet to see a newbie dissatisfied with that cartridge.

A few people around my local range have 700 Remington 5r rifles. U can get them in 223, 6.5 creedmore, 260, 308 and 300wm. I have a 300wm and love it for what it is. Comes in an h-s precision stock and most models are threaded for a break or suppressor. For the price they are hard to beat.
