Best powders for Dillon 550 metering?.

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
CFE 223 meters pretty well but its temperature sensitivity might be a problem.

What other powders have you found meter well on a progressive press powder drop like the Dillon 550?

I'm assuming the finer the granules the better it will meter.

Im guessing that you are loading a 223?

Benchmark does OK, and so does N120, which are the only powders I use with the powder measure, and that's for the 222 bunny blaster. There's no way the Dillon measure is accurate enough for any precision loading. Not my thing. I used to use the press for pistol and then it was fine.

Yes, 223. I'll be happy with 1" groups, here..wanna be able to crank out decent ammo quick..

You didn't mention what bullet weight you're shooting but if you are using bullets of 60gr or less Hodgdon Benchmark is not only a very good powder for those weights in a 223 but it meters very well and is one of Hodgdon's temp stabile powders.

69 - 77 gr

Benchmark won't be such a great choice for those bullet weights then.

A good choice for those bullet weights will be Win748 and it meters like water but it is more temp sensitive than the Hodgdon Extreme powders.

As long as you aren't loading redline loads developed in 35 degree weather then trying to shoot those same loads when it's 105 out you should be ok with using the different ball powders just keep things under redline loads.

Not sure about temp. Stability but for .223 I use TAC and for 9mm I use win231 in my Dillon 550.... Tac flows like water....

I was going to recommend TAC too.

You aren't going to get the greatest temp stability from ball and flake powders. At least none that I'm aware of.

Like was mentioned work up your load during your most common Temps and back off max and you will be fine.

garandman,

I use VV powders up to N-140 for .223. PowerPro 2000 MR works well, too. Consistency is improved by settling in the powder in the dispenser by throwing 15-20 charges and pouring them back into the dispenser. Also, I try to keep the powder level in between the top and bottom of the logo on the dispenser.

I have found throwing 5 charges, and measuring each one, gets me better consistency and let's me know with decent precision what I'm actually throwing. The first 3 charges after adjusting the measure can vary 0.5gr.

Good info, thx.

I've found aa2230 to meter almost as good as CFE223.
Like suggested above, throw several to get it settled, and keep the hopper at least half full.
