Best NBRSA HBR Action With Remington Foot Print.

My best friend Ed Bernabeo won that beautiful blue McMillan HBR Stock at the Nationals.

Since he does not shoot HBR, he ask me if he and I could collaborate and put together a nice HBR Rifle, and sell it or perhaps have some type of auction.

I happen to have a Remington action, (RR), that I have trued the threads and face on, added a Pacific Tool Bolt Assy, plus a nice one piece dovetail mount that I made several years ago. I already have a Bartlien 1-17 HBR barrel ordered that I will chamber.

But, this stock deserves an aftermarket action. So, what is the best aftermarket action that will fit in a Remington foot print.image.jpg

Jackie understands this....but most people don't realize that the rules for the HBR class mandate a magazine cut in the action....a 'repeater' even though you can use a single shot follower and don't have to use any magazine components.

Most of the 700 foot print custom actions out there fall short of being a true competition action because of bolt-to-receiver clearance. That would be the one major thing I'd have a discussion with any action maker about before ordering. Plus, many of them have a significant amount of cock on close designed in. That's not the end of the world but a 10 lb. gun with a 2.25" fore end moves around a lot in the bags, anyway.

As far as trigger hangers on a 700 foot print action...that's a double edged sword. The hangers are nice but they also limit the pillar size and reduce the amount of bedding surface available at the tang area.

For an out of the box action, the Kelbly Atlas would be hard to beat. Again, I'd verify bolt clearance but my single shot Atlas is in the ball park for BR use. You can also get a .173 spacer with the Atlas that allows the common 1.115" 'Panda' barrels to be used.

I'd for sure have a conversation with Jim Borden before going too far, though.

Man this stock has been hitchhiking a US tour in the last 7-8 months.
From Tennessee to Oregon down to Texas over to Arizona and back to Texas, poor fella still and found a place to land and call home. Lol

True, but it’s finally going to be put to purpose.

I simply want to cover all of the bases, as I will be buying most of the parts and doing the gunsmithing. I really do not know much about the HBR market, only that it is very limited. I certainly do not want to spend more that what we can sell the Rifle for, even though I am donating my time and Ed got that nice stock for free.

The thing about the Scope and weight, in my opinion, is a big thing. Those old true 6X HBR scopes that were produced by Burris, Weaver, and Leupold barely weigh a pound. I have looked at several scopes that are variables that could be suitable, but you are dealing with 5 to 6 more ounces.

The Swarovski Z3 in 4-12x50 is good on weight if one could live with the available reticles, the Zeiss Conquest in 2-12x50 is another option but does weigh over 20 ounces.

Well that trued 700 kinda matches and keeps cost down, and have been known to operate pretty slick.
I did a scope swap this year, weight being my biggest concern.
I went with 2 Leupold variables 4x12 and a 4.5x14 I believe they were 13oz each. I have no knowledge of HBR rules or restrictions on magnification.
Glad to see it's on the work bench, looking forward to seeing it built with a couple groups showing it's potential.
 
Jackie, is the PTG bolt in the trued up 700 bolt a coned bolt? Honestly, if it is and the action has adequate mechanical camming and the bolt clearance is under .002, that would be a good one.

The max scope power is 6x, it has been customary to set a variable at 6x and have it taped in place during a Match.

Al, what is the average weight of a 22 inch 30 caliber barrel in legal HBR profile.
 
Jackie I have heard a few votes for Kelbly’s Atlas actions in your thread, but the HBR actions have a width limit too, plus I think the Atlas might be too heavy. I think the Kelbly’s model you should look at is the Kodiak. A fair number of these aluminum Kodiak actions are bought by actual hunters that want a lightweight custom action, so you have to be sure you’re getting what you need. Be sure to tell them if you want a left feed right eject etc., they need to include the minimum size port in the bottom to meet NBRSA rules, you want a coned bolt, etc. Also they don’t polish actions in house any longer, they send them to Tom Meredith so add another month for that. I got a rifle built last year and I can help with your barrel weight question. I will send you a PM later.

The HBR action width limit is 1.400". I love the Kodiaks and have used them quite a bit...including my current HBR gun.

I believe Jackie's preference for a 700 foot print action is so the existing inletting doesn't have to be changed.
