Just wanted to add what I found is the best for me. It's a dental tool called a composite filling spatula. They use it to put in the composite when they do an impression of teeth/jaw.

They are wide enough not to be pointy, and they are angled enough for the bolt lug recesses. They also alternate each end by 90*. Simply insert a decent sized patch into your lug area and use the tool to spin the patch around. The thin part of the spatula will help get in the edges. I bought a multi pack and tossed them in various range bags and cleaning kits that I have.

I have been using these both in my AR15 and my bolt guns. If you are every worried about them being metal, you could always plasti-dip them.
