best long range scope under $300?

Define "long range".

Out to 400 yards on game, i've used a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12X42. Can make hits out to 600 yards but not ideal. Rangefinder needed.

Redfield Revenge 4-12X40 same as above, but rangefinder built into the scope. Glass not quite as good.

If you save up in the $400 range the Sightron 4-20X50 STAC is an excellent scope for the money. Downside is it's big & heavy.

You may want to try the Leupold VX Freedom line.

With Nikon's announcement that they are getting out of the rifle scope business, there are some really good buys out there. I have a Nikon M223 4-16 X 44 BDC on an AR that I like really well. I have also been pleased with the "value" that Vortex offers - I had a Viper 6.5-20 X 44 and have a GE on my F-class rifle.

Maybe none, maybe you get lucky. Whatever you decide on if it's a company with a good warranty reputation I would jump up a grade and look for a used one. I would be looking at Luepold or Vortex.if 12x is enough look for an older used straight 12x, they come with and without target knobs I used them for years on competition guns, never one problem. I have seen them in that price range. I see 6.5 x 20 leupold in the 1 in tube version for not much more than that used.

I personally haven't used them but a friend swears by Muellers. I don't have Nightforce or even high end by todays standards but I'm still waiting for them to fail. Right now I'm the one drawing the laughs. He even has a regular behind me guy converted. He is buying new 8-32s for around $150 and I have to admit he is doing fine so far

Used old stuff of the right quality is probably WAY better than much of the new stuff in that price range.

Also: demo, refurbished, used market.

Call aaoptics and see what he has in factory refurbs.

Primary Arms has some cheap scopes with innovative reticles. I'll have one of their 1-6x24 Gen III ACSS soon for a AR that I can compare to my Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 (now discontinued). For $260 I don't expect much, but there sure are a lot of people that rave about their value, durability and reticle designer/ tester. Unlike many others, the system supposedly just works. Plus there's a lifetime warranty now.

I plan on banging steel at the ranch out to about 500yards and maybe shoot a hog if the opportunity arises. I suspect it will be just fine.

Like mentioned above,Primary Arms may be a good choice . I have handled two, both were under 300 dollars...glass was impressive for the price, built like a tank to boot . One had a funky reticle for ranging deer sized game , worked well . May work for LR target also ?
