Best location for temp sticker on barrel

Bought a pack of those neat temp stickers for my barrels, where is the best place for them. Close to the action or more towards the middle. I have noticed that the middle seems to be the hottest area. Looking at pictures they look like they can be anywhere??

I put mine close to the action. They are easier to see because they are closer

Close to action, left side about 10 O-Clock, as I am right handed and it is easy to look to the side and see the temp, for left handed shooters, I would recommend attaching it to the right side about 2 O-Clock. You want to measure the temp where the heat is going to be the highest. I try to keep temps between 113F and 122F, based on the temp strips I purchased from McMaster-Carr.

pass the purchase information

I have tried them in different spots an liked putting them at the hottest place on the barrel. This is not going to make them all end up in the same place, but it keeps you from a reading that maybe good were you have placed it , while still hotter than you want to get some were else. If you clean the area with a bit of alcohol before installation they will stick & hold much better.

Why don't you test YOUR barrel with 4 or 5 strips from the breech out and find your hot spot, then work from there. Every barrel/cartridge/load combo has its own hot spot.

The hot spot on my gun seems to be about 7 inches forward of the breech so that's where I put the temp strip. Works good and gives me a quick indication of when to rest, normally around 122 degrees.

I have mine about 5" in front of the breech. Even if it's not the hottest place, it's plenty hot there. The advice about wiping the barrel with rubbing alcohol before applying is spot on.

#40FAN: largely a function of caliber, load, and barrel profile. A bull/varmint barrel heats up slower but also cools down slower. .222 Remington hardly hearts up at all, while .22-250 with a varmint profile heats up fairly quickly.

I got a couple barrel cooling fans (barrelcool.com) that work pretty slick and function as an empty chamber indicator. On a 95 degree day it cooled my .22-250 varmint barrel 10 degrees in about 10-15 minutes. I imagine it'll be quicker this winter.

The temp strips I have installed are on hunting rifles with sporter style barrels about 5" from the action where the barrels get much reduced in size. I shoot three shots, let them cool to the lowest temperature on the strip. My 338 Win Mag goes up about 40 degrees from three shots. My 30-06 more like 20 to 30 degrees. I am going to install them on my 6xc heavy barrel rifle and my 6.5x284. I bought them from McMaster Carr industrial supply. I also have a 7mm Rem Mag (my brothers doing load development for him) that I will install one all as well as a 270 WSM both are getting new barrels installed now.

I have not use them but I would think you would put it nearest the throat section of the barrel as that is where most heat is accumulated
