Best load on 6 mm br varget power 85 gr bullet

Hi there looking for the best load useing Varget powder.I am useing boat tail sierra 85 gr hp 1530.My rifle is a 6 mm br and the twist is 1*8.What is the best way to find my right load .Is it better to have the bullet sitting on the rifting at the start our would have it back from the rifling 10 our 20 our 30 back where would you start please

Haven't shot the 85 Sierra with Varget, my best load with the 80 gr Sierra was 30. H4895 rem 7 1/2 primers .020 off the lands. Have had good luck with 30.0 Varget and various bullets. Also had good luck with 30.8 VV 135. My 6 BR 1 -10 twist isn't real particular seems to shoot Well with everything Good Luck

Have'nt tried 85 gr, but a tight shooter in my 30' Shilen barrel, also a factory 28' savage was the 80gr Berger fb.
30gr of varget, or RL15. Put in the lands a little this will trim the hair off a fly up to 300yds.

Having never used Varget powder, I find its specs too slow burning for .223 Remington applications and too fast burning for .243 Winchester applications, and since these are my only two current APPLICATIONS, WOW; It sits in the middle twixt my favored powders: Alliant 10x for .223 Rem and H4350 and RL-15 for .243 Winnie Pooh Apps. Varget may be suitable for 6.8mm SPC loads, but I can't verify that yet. Any 6.8mm SPC shooters, please respond . . . cliffy

A nice round 30 grains works great with the Speer 85 SPBT in my 6BR no turn neck light sporter rifle

the rifle was a S/S factory Tikka sporter barrel in .243 that was cut and shut into a 6BR

and this load shoots close to the same POI of my 65 Vmax varmint load- so if i see a goat or hog while out after ferals I have 10 of the 85 grainers in my pocket to be able to fill the freezer with

shaun: Ditto for 30 grs. of Varget with various weight bullets in the 6BR. I have 4 chamberings in 6BR, and Varget is another consistant performer with 70 to 95 gr. weights. I've found the 85 gr. #1530 to be an excellent choice: varmint bullet with match bullet performance. All my chambers, both tight fitted and tight no-turn, prefer seated-to-touch.:)

cliffy: If you have never tried Varget in the 223 with 69 to 77 gr bullets 1-N-9 twist you don't know what you are missing. Also it great in the 243.

I don't have as such a 6br but I do have a wildcat 6mm-225 Winchester that is about the same case capacity as the 6br in a 14' contender barrel. I have not tried the 85 Sierra but it is a tack driver with the Sierra 80 gr SSP or blitz with 30 grs Varget. I get 2700 fps from the 14' barrel.

2506: As proven by my son in his 600 yard F-Class matches, in Florida, also a winner in a 1-7 twist Hart barrel, 80 gr. Sierra MatchKing, using 24.5 grains. Guess these are all reasons why Varget is so difficult to find now. 25.5 grs. with the Sierra 69 gr. #1380 is another top choice in 9 twist or faster: and the list goes on and on.

After some, if not nearly enough experimentation with 85 grain Barnes TSX hunting fare, I've decided RL-15 is the fastest powder ever needed and H4350 is the slowest powder that performs extremely well, I've "discovered" that Hodgdon H414 stands solidly betwixt the two performancewise, and performs IT DOES! I keep learning through experimentation. Of course, I use a .243 Winchester, since it is, afterall, the MOST POPULAR 6mm cartridge WORLDWIDE today. Cliffy

Ive got a savage F Class 6mm BR shoots great as a factory rifle couldnt been more pleased with it. In that im using 107gr SMK's. cci br primers and 2206H powder with the pills 0.20 off the lands

I use 32 grains of Varget with 85g sierra hpbt gamekings cci 450 primers touching the lands. I have hunted all my life with this bullet in 243 and in recent years in 6br we shoot 8-10 a year on our property it is a stone cold killer. I have shot this same combination with 107 berger vlds makes a huge hole and wastes a lot of meat at close range. Velocity with the 85g sierra is 3075 out my 28" barrel.

I only shoot 80g Bergers F.B. (in 6MM) out to 200 yds, and use 30.5g of Varget. And have shot in the mid .1 ;D but on avg, its about .2 :) at 100, when I'm having a good day.
Mike.
