Best Idea for a 17# 600Y "Fly Shoot" Gun

I'm thinking of putting together a 17# gun to compete in the Light Gun category of Mike Cockcroft's 500M (550Y) "Fly" matches in Huntsville. I was initially thinking a heavy (105gr) 6mm (6BR, 6 Dasher, 6 BRA) would offer the best balance of ballistics and recoil management. But now I wonder now if something like a 130gr 6.5mm Berger from a 6.5X47 Lapua case might be a better bet for when the wind blows. Any thoughts?

At 500 m you might be looking at a wash between a 6 Dasher and a 6.5x47L. A quick check of the JBM calculator shows very little difference in wind drift at 500 between the two, taking into consideration the velocity differences. If it is indeed that close with the loads and bullets you are considering, I'd go with the Dasher or similar. Less recoil, all other things being generally equal, is a good tie breaker.

Hard to beat the 6br improved when the wind isn’t blowing big time. If that’s the case I feel you need to step up to the 7mm stuff. Having said that...you’ll see guys shooting all kinds of stuff down at Mike’s...from 6ppc ackley to 300wsm.

I shot the match, it was a lot of fun...still having nightmares about the last relay, sure would like to have it back. ;) But that is what keeps us coming back. You win against that group down there you’ve done something...that is some of the toughest shooting group in the country.

Kyle,
Good meeting you yesterday at the Denton shoot. Y'all sent me home with my tail between my legs. Although I did beat a couple of the guys that didn't finish all the relays.
You are not alone, many of us are trying to decide what our magic 'Fly" rifle will be for next season. Scott Deal and I discuss it every week. A variation of the 6br and a 7mm of some sort seem to be on everyone's mind.
I will have a 6br of some sort and think I will chamber up a 7-08AI this winter to play with, just to be different. My 260AI barrel wont last another season so if the 7-08AI doesn't impress me I will put another 260AI barrel on. We need good wind bucking cartridges but 547 yards is not 1000 so I don't plan on shooting hard kicking 7 or 30's with 180 to 215 gr bullets. I'm just not man enough I guess. Remember no muzzle brakes next year.

I followed the development of the Fly Shoot with great interest, hoping I might be able to make it this year. Alas, moving my household and my shop have taken priority over more interesting and pleasurable pursuits. BUT, I'm a couple of weeks away from becoming a resident of Texas and there is nothing short of catastrophe that will keep me from the next one.

Mike, you and your crew really put in the work! Tip of the hat to you and the supporting cast that made this event such a success. If you don't mind a transplanted Yankee showing up in support of the cause, I'll be there with a .260 AI in tune. My wife is a native Texan, so that should count for something . . .

Again, congratulations on hosting such a successful event.

Can someone please give me a link to where i can learn about the Fly Shoot...........Thanks

Best Regards
Rick

Holy smokes! You made Denton?? Had I known that...

A Dasher light gun purchased from these classifieds and piloted by a good shooter won Mike's match (an the postal overall). A 6.5x47 did real well, as did a straight .284 (I think). If going with the x47 or a 7mm, I'd build it real heavy. You'll want to be able to shoot it quickly and comfortably and no brakes allowed.

Oops. You plainly said 17# light gun. My $.02 is a 6BR improved.

Had you been there I would have been one notch lower on the score board. Thank you for not attending. Doc Martin was my traveling companion. He did not help by winning any gas money either. Normally I can count on him winning enough money to get us home.

No. Ya'll would have beaten one more had I made it.

That Denton/ Sanger Poker Chip match has gotten really friggin' unforgiving with guys shooting perfect 40s seemingly every other match. Stick shot a 39 a few months ago and finished out of the $. Last year, a score average of about 34 was in the running for SOTY. Not this year!

Pisser for me is that Dino is my travel partner and he would have had to buy me a Liberty Burger & a pint with his winnings...

PM me your bank account...I'll send you enough money to get home. Last thing we need is you Huntsville guys living in North Texas ;)

What is this BS about no brakes? I thought you "fixed" that nonsense?

Not wanting to be left out of the "in" crowd, I have a 6BRAI reamer on the way. I may also make up a 6-250AI and shoot 115's just to be the odd man out.

Don't forget the last several Poker Chip shoots there has been NO wind in Denton that's why the Huston guys didn't do well.;)
Dino is getting a special target next match.

Judd,
The Aussies agreed to it for the "trial" shoot. I want to go head to head with them from here on out. They claim we will never beat them again. There were 3 muzzle brakes at the shoot. That tells me that the rule is not a problem. One of them was my daughter in law, her rifle will not have a brake next season. Eric took his off before he started shooting.
I understand a brake helping see impacts on clay birds or poker chips. No value seeing hits on paper at 500M Light gun = small cartridge. Heavy gun = large cartridge.
I am doing my best to make everyone involved in this new (to us) format happy. It has cost me a lot of money and I hope it doesn't cost me any of my shooting friends.
HOPEFULLY YOU WILL SHOOT WITH US NEXT YEAR!!!!

Thank God Dino is so humble or we would never hear the end of it.
I think Travis just comes so he can carry Dino's equipment to the bench for him.

I come to give the ladies something to look at! Sorry. This thread is officially hijacked.

Back on point... 6BRAI for the win! The only rule is that you have to pick your own clever name for the cartridge and have it engraved on the barrel. "6BRAI" is just too lame.

Good idea. Only problem is all the names I come up with are NSFW
.....Or how about the 7mm Badger Eater
Kyle needs to understand if he's going to hang around with us he needs to get used to the BS and be thick skinned
