Best Hunting Bullet for 7.62x39

I have an AR upper in 7.62x39 that shoots great with the basic Wolf/ Tula steel cased ammo and I thought it would be a great coyote gun . I live in Calif. so I need to hunt with non-lead projectiles which need speed to expand. I came across Cavity Back Bullets and they have a dedicated bullet for the 7.62x39 thats .310 , 125 grain and almost triples in expansion down at 1100 fps. Going to give them a try !

I had a 7.62 upper for a while that sat on an AR lower, from a company in Washington. The upper was advertised as 0.312 bore, not the only time I’ve seen that number for an AK. I shot all that marginal Russian ammo in it, weights from 123 gr to 154 gr, killed deer at 100 yds no problem, but accuracy was only 3-4 MOA on a good day. Glad to say it’s been sold.

The wife has taken a couple deer with her Howa Mini in 7.62x39 with the Speer 130 grain HP. This is a good bullet at 7.62x39 velocity on deer. I am working up my round count on my 300 HAM'R AR15 so that I can resume shooting the 130 Grain Speer's in it. My Shaw barrel has a sharp edge on the throat and shaves jacket material off the soft jacket Speer 130 HP Bullets. Per Wilson Combat this will wear in and not be a problem after a couple hundred rounds. I plan on this being my main bullet in the 300 HAM'R also.

I use to own a Ruger Hawkeye 77 chambered for the 7.62X39 m/m. I hunted Deer, here in KY, using an old Winchester Silvertip 150 grain bullet, intended for the .30-30. Accuracy was great, as the 77's bore measured .3095" and it had a long chamber throat. When loading this bullet, I just necked sized the cases, and used IMR-4198 powder. I harvested several Deer with my load.
