Best gunsmiths

I am getting ready to build my next custom. What I am looking for a real good walking varmint rifle with the accuracy of a bench rest rifle. 22-250, 223, 243,? My present shots are from 200 to 300 yards. My budjet is around 3k for this rifle.Who would you consider the best of the best to build it?

There are several good gunsmiths out there. The key is to use a good benchrest gunsmith and to understand that even the best gunsmith won't make a walking varminter into a br rifle, especially in the calibers listed. They are good calibers but, are one of the limiting factors to your plan. Be realistic about the end result and it's intended purpose. Even some factory guns can be made to shoot the occasional "BR size group", but a BR gun does it consistently. I'm certain that you can have a very good shooting varmint rifle built within your budget, but just understand the difference between a true br gun and a varmint gun. If varmint guns could beat br guns very often, there wouldn't be much need for such a specialized gun for BR, and we'd all just shoot our varmint hunting guns in competition, then go hunting after the match. It just doesn't work that way. BR rifles are pupose built pieces of equipment. A varmint rifle is a compromise of accuracy and practicality.--Mike Ezell
