Best dot for 600 yards

1/8 like Terry suggested. I have moved away from those and prefer fine cross hairs over a dot when shooting paper at any distance now.

It largely depends on your eyes, and the magnification at which the dot dimension has been calibrated. I have a few NF 12-42 NXS scopes with the NP2DD reticle. I also have a NF Competition scope with the CTR-2 reticle. At the 22X calibration magnification, the 12-42 NXS NP-2DD dot subtends 0.13 MOA, the Competition CTR-2 dot subtends .095 MOA at the 40X calibration magnification. I also have an IOR-Valdada BR fixed 36X scope that has a 0.125 MOA dot. At 36X, the 12-42 NXS dot subtends ~0.117 MOA; the Competition CTR-2 dot subtends ~.106 MOA. So using the fixed 36X magnification point for direct comparison, the respective dots sizes are:

IOR-Valdada (0.125 MOA) > NXS 12-42 (0.117 MOA) > Competition (0.106 MOA)

In fact, my eyes actually told me this before I ever calculated the respective reticle dot subtensions at a common "apples-to-apples" 36X magnification. My eyes will occasionally lose the Competition CTR-2 dot against the target aiming black at 600 yds, especially early in the morning when the sun is low, or on a cloudy day. The same is true with the NXS 12-42 NP-2DD dot, although it's not as noticeable. At 0.125 MOA, the IOR-Valdada dot remains readily visible to my eyes against the target black, even in relatively low-light conditions.

If you can find the reticle calibrated dot subtensions for scopes you might be considering, it is fairly simple to pick a common magnification and estimate the apparent dot size as a good starting point for making some decision between them. Nonetheless, it is usually a good idea to actually take a look through the selected scope whenever possible, just to be sure. Your eyes should always be the final judge if it's possible. I have found that other shooters at the range are usually more than willing to let someone take a look through their scopes.

I personally find a 0.125 MOA dot to be just about perfect. My eyes don't seem to ever "lose it" against the target black, but it's not so large as to obscure a sizable amount of the the target X-ring. A dot smaller than 0.125 MOA seems to be a problem for me, and 0.250 MOA would be gross overkill.

What would be best at 600 ,1/8 or 1/4? Shooting paper

I like a big dot, from 50’ smallbore to 1000 yards. I liked small dots until I went big, 3/8 minute or larger now! And I have good vision. Even with a big dot you can do fine corrections. When I convinced my wife to go to a big dot she became an even more dangerous opponent!
