Best Day So Far 2012

Good shooting, Chino. I got 3 today (so far, going out this evening if the rain quits), bringing my season total to 257. #256 was shot at 370 yards and about a half hour after it was shot a buzzard landed and started feasting. I think it was one of the buzzards that follow me around. ;)

Question, What do you do with the hogs just dump them in the dumpster or leave them on the tree line

I often rotate between fields so I don't want vultures circling the dead hog or worse landing to feed on it since their presence may discourage other hogs from coming out. So before I leave a field, I toss the hog into the nearest tree line.

my body count is no where near you guys. our temperatures have been 95-107 and the pigs will not come out! a huge thunderstorm came up yesterday and passed thru quickly and the temp dropped 20+ degrees! my rav 4 is always packed, so i headed to a site not hunted and got ready...there they come! i could see three at one time, but two were too near the landowners house...bullet would go directly over his house, so it's a no shooter. watched the pig eat, stand, eat, walk and i'm gritting my teeth and having to look away so as not to tempt myself. finally one wanders out at 358 yds and i cranked up my new sightron 8-32 target dot 3 1/2 min over my 100 yd zero on my 22-250, dot on chest and sent it....whaaaccckkk! DRT! saw another(head only) eating in some tall clover and waited...gave me a profile and i guessed where his body was and...WHAAACCCKKK! 230 yds and a 12lb 14 oz male! largest to date. saw the landowner, so paid a visit. he told me to sit down in the shade and wait a few and one would come out of the fence row near his house...yep, walked into the clover and ate his last. a 10 lb 4 0z male. retrieved the ghog and went to another field. you guessed it...a sweet 200 yd chest whack with my 22BRX, 69 barnes bullet and it didn't move. starting to get dark, so i packed up. another bad habit...i always look at the field before shutting car door and darnit...another ghog, a big one just glaring at me! what would you do? out comes the 22 BRX and it spoke again...11 lb 5 0z DRT! now it is getting dark and i had to hurry to retrieve since i don't carry a flashlight. a really good hunt. i like the idea of sitting in the shade with the landowner as my spotter!

You're literally knocking them dead! Nice shooting!! Love that 250! Always good to have an enthusiastic landowner on your side for obvious reasons. Good story! Thanks!! Pics would help. :P

One of the best days I ever had was after a severe thunder storm. I had been out in the field and saw the clouds turn black so I headed for the SUV to wait out the storm. It was about 5:00 PM. It rained very hard for about 45 minutes then stopped. There was still plenty of light and hunting time remaining but there was also a lot of thunder still around meaning lighting also.

Not one of the brightest things I ever did but I went back out into the fields anyway praying that I didn't get struck by lightening. Then a thought, not lighting, struck me, I wasn't sure "THE MAN" upstairs would take kindly to me praying to be spared so I could kill more hogs. :(

Well they were everywhere - As I came over a rise I saw three along a tree line widely dispersed - two more in a hayfield sitting on their holes where I wasn't even aware that there were holes. I went to work getting 3 before I spooked them.

I crossed the tree line which concealed my approach into another field. Saw four more, got 2. These were all sitting on their holes.

Came back to the other field and got 2 more. Back to the other field and got another one, a long shot (for me) 257 yards at the edge of a far tree line.

In the space of less than two hours I had nailed 8 hogs, all nice shots (for me) ranging from 158 to 257 yards.

However it's not something I'd recommend, carrying a lighting rod on your shoulder with thunder still in the area - I was a lot younger then, not any smarter now - just more cautious :)

Great story, K22. And I agree, I think they are after the moisture that is remaining on the plants. Come to think of it, I have never seen a groundhog drinking water from a puddle or a stream or whatever.

Not sure why I saw so many immediately after the storm, perhaps it was for the reason you suggest or maybe their holes had some water in them but what ever the reason it was crazy - it was like someone rang the dinner bell and they all came out.

Some of my worst days was when the temperature was in the high 90's and very dry. We are experiencing that kind of weather now in eastern PA, tomorrow it's suppose to go to 102! It's also very dry, the grass is like Rice Crispies - it crackles when you walk on it.

Hope to get out next week when the weather is more reasonable. Trigger finger is really anxious :) I'm seeing hog men in my sleep - yes I'm addicted - a real hogaholic :-[

The 11pm news in Columbus, Ohio just predicted a high of 103 for tomorrow. I don't think I will be doing any groundhog hunting tomorrow - unless I can manage to get out of bed EARLY.

Depends what you shoot them with! They make some mighty fine eating....seasoned, baked with dressing and served with navy beans and cornbread, or bar b qued! Yum, Yum, Yum! ;)

In Columbus staying with our Son, Daughter-In-Law, two Granddaughters and our newest Granddaughter born on June 28th. Too bad I didn't know you were in the area, maybe we could have done some hogging together.

Was willing to get a three day non-resident hunting license when a friend of my Son's said he had an Aunt with ghogs on her property, but that didn't pan out. Guess she got nervous about a stranger wandering her property.

My Son and I are supposed to leave shortly to go to a target range called Delaware State Shooting. We pay 5$ at Norton's Sporting Goods and go shoot for a few hours. Bringing my 204 and 22-250 and my son's XDm in 9mm.

Let me know if you are going to be around for a couple more days. PM me and I will reply with a phone number. I'm in Knox County which is one county over from Delaware. I can show you where I made the 1062 yard shot and maybe we can find another out there. I also have another spot for a 1250 yard shot but the beans are starting to get high.

I went out this AM, but not real early. Was in a bean field a little after 7:30. Shot 4 with the longest at 430 yards. It was starting to get hot at 10AM when I saw three more that I didn't get shots at. The bean field bordered a county road and they ran in when cars passed before I could get set up for shots.

had a great hunt sat, in spite of rain and some lightening. got permission to hunt virgin ghog territory. drove the road to the site we go. high on a hillside and down below was 400+ acres of river bottom hay field! an old house and barn and dark green grass everywhere. we began frantically glassing and my buddy says he sees somebody in the window of the old house...not a ghost, but a huge ghog just checking out the weather. set up the 22-250 pushing 63 cheeks and he decides to come out to dine. first eat, then stand, then eat, then stand...HOLD STILL! 348 yds he stands to stare and WHACCKKK! he took a nap. 10# 10 oz. where is your daddy? the rain came and went and we got 3 more small ones and found many old holes. missed one at 600 yds, the second attempt foiled by a deer running between me and the ghog. we'll be back.
