Best Coyote bullet for .260 Rem?

Guys, I've never shot any varmint wt. bullets in .260, but have a new rifle and want to try some. It has a 1:8.5" twist. I'm focusing my preliminary lust on the 95 gr. VMax and 100 Gr. Nos. BT's. However, have any of you found the longer 120 gr. bullets to shoot better in the slightly faster twist? Usually, at least in my experience, it's more of a matter of which rifle you're shooting than anything else, as long as the twist is fast ENOUGH.

Also, does anyone make the new copper/tin cored bullets, and do they pose less risk of riccochet? There are some areas where I'd appreciate a guaranteed not to riccochet bullet.

Thanks for your experience.

I'm bout to work up a load w/85gr sierra varminters but I have a 1-10 plus I want to see what kind of info you get.

My sako 6.5x55 1/8 twist will shoot 85 grain to 140 grain bullets with great accuracy.
A mate gave me the 85 sierras so I loaded some up not really expecting them to group well.
I got .25in groups at 100 yards so I then set up a target at 300 and was getting groups of 1.5in .
That was from a light barrel hunting rifle and 12 power scope.

If you hate coyote and do not mind pelt dammage then +1 on the 85gr sierra. I use them in an AR-15 chambered in 6.5-243wssm on Baited coyotes it has a 1-8 twist and shoots them about 3250fps. Big holes ....... so far on 12 yotes DRT

Hi there,

I have been testing .224 diameter varmint bullets for riccochette reduction. To be honest, there is no such thing as a bullet that won't riccochette under the right circumstances. If you hit a hard enough surface at a low enough angle, you will not create enough force inside the bullet to make it come apart. Longer range shots are really a problem because bullet energy is lower, and that can make riccochettes happen as well.

In .224 diameter, the Vmax bullets are slightly less likely to riccochette than the Ballistic tip bullets. I have also compared the 155 Amax to the 110 Vmax in the 308 win (a riccochette machine). All in all, the 155 does put down a coyote, but even close in shots (<100 yards) at 2900 fps MV gives a situation where a chest shot dog will sometimes run some ways while bleeding out (especially if you thread it between ribs) - despite the 2" hole inthe far side. A 110 Vmax @ 3300 fps seems to stop coyotes (and most other small critters) much better. I have not had a 110 ricochette (I haven't shot that many though), but I've seen the 155 do it repeatedly.

Moral of the story: never fire a shot with anything downrange that you aren't willing to destroy. Riccochettes happen, and Murphy is always around to make sure it happens at an inopportune time.

If you don't care about pelt damage the 100 gr Sierra HP is A-BOMB. I shoot it for groundhogs in my M-96 Mauser 6.5X55 Swede that has a 7.87" twist. I also shoot the 120 Ballistic Tip and Sierra SP at 3000 fps for deer. They both react about the same way. They are tougher than varmint bullets.
