What is the best tool for measuring neck wall thickness?

My vote would be for a quality ball micrometer. Thats what I use anyway.

Expensive, but probably the best most accurate way to go, I have tried and owned most of the tools out there, and this one leaves no doubt in my mind. Theres another thread here where someone made a stop so tool measures same spot on case neck also. Or order the preset neck turning tool from PMA and turn away. He guarantees tool to be on the money for your preferred neck thickness.

There are really two general types, each for a slightly different purpose.

One that is made for rapid measurement that allows you to go through a lot of brass to cull the bad ones. A good example would be the Redding Case Neck Concentricity Gage. They are less expensive but don’t have the highest degree of accuracy ~0.0005”.

The second type is what is called “tube micrometer”. They are not made for measuring large batches of brass but gives very accurate measurements. They can be more expensive. An extreme example would be the Mitutoyo 395-363 LCD Tube Micrometer that can measure down to 0.00005”.

Buy the right tool for the right job.

I use a non digital Mitutoyo ball mic. One of the best measuring tools on my bench. Use a small block along the ball stem as a stop to get a consistent measurement location on the neck.

I have been using for some years the 1 Sinclair sells on the little stand. It has served me well and have never had any problems with it.
