best case holder for neck turning

I have a k&m but the shaft that goes into the drill chuck unscrewed itself from the rest of the unit leaving a case holder jammed in it. I have an early sinclair with the three grubs screws holding the the lee autoprime shelholder in place. Either the grub screws work loose or the case if it sticks on the turner mandrel spins in the holder and it countersinks the primer hole. There has to be a better way? I see harts sell one but it is pricey what else is out there?

what are the lee ones like? I am in New Zealand so that is about all i can buy locally. I will go ahead and get a decent one but it will take a couple of weeks to ship. Any votes PMA vs 21st century?

Go with the lee universal chuck you can put right into a cordless drill. They work quite well.

Bro I am in NZ as well but you need to buy Sinclair. Best on the market by far. K&M for your neck turner though.

This is the unit which has a vid on it.

My K&M neck turner gathers dust since I got a PMA so much easier to adjust and cutters with different angles available and less heat expansion issues

I have the earlier version of that sinclair one -similar design but it takes lee autoprime shell holders and I'm not a fan of it.

Think I will grab a PMA case spinner

I like my PMA better than any I have tried and I have all of them mentioned in this thread. The Lee comes loose, the K & M doesn't center perfectly all the time. The PMA stays tight, centers perfedtly, unscrews easily when I want, and is priced fairly. I really like my PMA holder and their turner as well.

I have a Harts. It works.... IF you keep all lube off of the casehead (Probably true of most case holder designs). Note that the Hart requires Redding S/H's, or require you open up primer access hole on non-Redding S/H's.

The 21st Century has a "post" that goes into cases' primer pockets to help secure and center them, and there is a rubber ring around it that is compressed as the holder is tightened on the case, which increases friction so that the case does not turn when the holder is tightened by hand. I believe that it is the only one with this feature, although it appears that the PMA also has the post, and has a relatively fine thread and a good sized area to grip for tightening. Neither one use standard shell holders, but I would trade better function for that feature.

i also use the sinclair chuck it on a 10.8v drill that turns low rpm's (was going to throw the drill out but now it found a home

I also use the Lee style holder, but in a floor mounted drill press. Generally the problem with this or any other holder to loosen is the failure to tighten the chuck properly. The key should be used in each of the three holes and tightened. As an older German mold maker told me " they didn't drill 3 holes because they had extra time". He didn't tell me that (decades ago) in quite so nice a manner.
With keyless chucks....well I just don't know.

I should mention the safety factor in using a drill press. Use the slowest speed. Feed the cutter slowly with lube. Hold in a manner that should the cutter bite the brass it pulls it out of your hand, Not INTO your hand. I have great success in using this method as the feed is controlled and seen very clearly by you with minimum effort. Familiarity with the press and common sense must prevail. i.e no long sleeve flopping shirt, etc.,etc.

+1 for Harts. Got mine here http://www.midwayusa.com/product/634624/r-w-hart-neck-turning-case-holder?cm_vc=ProductFinding. Along with the appropriate Redding shell holder - its center hole is large enough for the Harts post to engage the case head, other shell holders apparently can be used if you enlarge their center hole. The Harts has a hex shaft that has never come loose in the keyless chuck on my 2-speed electric drill.

+ 1 on the 21st Century. Between the post that projects into the primer pocket and the rubber O ring it works very well at centering and holding the case. The only other one I have used is the Sinclair and I like the 21st Century better.

21st Century case holder and neck turner in action with Harbor Freight mini-lathe. The split ring is from McMaster-Carr for added torque. The case holder and neck turner are both excellent designs.
