best cartridge for coyotes opinion

Wondering now if hollow points would make any difference. I know they do a job on plastic cola jugs. Not looking to turn a coyote's head into a canoe. Lol.

p.s.: eastern fox squirrels are also a problem.
Not sure if you can find the tnt green in 224 cal but I've had good success with the lead tnt 50gr on yotes as long as your not just behind the shoulder. Doesn't exit. The 55 ballistic tip does well out of the swift

Cat, the other white meat.

I've eaten dog and cat while living Taiwan and enjoyed it. I eaten just about everything I trapped or shot except skunk, mink and fox. I tried coyote twice and both times it taste like it smells, even cooked in BBQ sauce couldn't hide it.
You will do better than most in the apocalypse. I think of the village rat catchers in China. Most (western) women would die before eating a rat. My wife would almost die looking at one. I'll have to be sure to have some BBQ sauce on hand if it comes to that......

A suppressed. 223 with a 40 gr V-max at about 3750 fps is a deadly combination and not to loud. Very flat shooting and rarely an exit hole. This will be my main rifle this winter when the yotes come close trying to take out my crazy Tom cat. Let the games begin.

Mine is a 18" suppressed, .223 with a 50 gr TNT moly coated at 3350 fps.

I've used a 222 223 and a 204 in rifles. Had one farmer who didn't want me using a rifle and calling them in close and 4 buck worked great.

I'm in with the .223Rem/5.56 crowd. Lean toward the .223 only because they usually don't stick around after the 1st shot so I like highly accurate bolt actions with tested hand loads. One and done.

If you want to to blow up a coyote,223 Bolt gun, reload a 55g Sierra lead tip blitz with a max load of IMR XBR 8208 cci 450. The bullet never blows up on the surface at 3400 fps in a bolt gun. These bullets work best in 10T to 14T barrels. With the 50g Sierra lead tip blitz, 27.5g of Win 748 puts them down real hard, also.

Savage is importing one heck of rifle now. In a 243, an 80g Sierra lead tip blitz sounds like it has hit a block wall when it contacts a coyote. In Rem 700, I shoot an over book max load of IMR 4064 with a fed 210 at 3400 fps with the Sierra 80s. We shot hundreds of coyotes in Mexico with the 60g Sierra Hp and 80g Sierra, they can turn a bad hit into a very dead coyote, unlike 22/250s.

22/250s are a great on coyotes if you keep the bullet impact in front of the diaphragm, but in today's world, you will be more apt to find a 22 Creed.

The 220 Swift and 22/250 AI with 55's at 3950-4050 are tremendous on coyotes, unfortunately, both of these two cartridges will be replaced by the 22 Creed over time. I killed a lot of coyotes fire forming 22/250 brass to AI with 55's at 3850 shooting 1/2" groups with Varget and Win 760. Re chambered New Rem 223 12 Twist barrels shoot incredible when chambered to 22/250 AI.

As coyotes move into an area, house pets are just a meal of choice. They keep coming back and checking where the pets urinate.

When I lived in S. Ca, we had friends that lost small dogs and cats while the animal was sitting on the back door step. Dumb people in the area start feeding the coyotes in pet food bowls on their back door step, and the coyotes will check every house where they think that a pet is just another form of Purina.

We were coming back from a hunting trip in Mexico, crossed over the border just south of the Oregon Pipe National monument. There was a pull out on each side of the road, and all 4 of us in the truck had to relieve ourselves. Just as we were getting out of the truck, an elderly man and woman had stopped their car, and they let their poodle out to go Wee Wee. A coyote came out of the brush and snatched that poodle like a lightening bolt. I heard the poodle YIP and knew that the coyote had broke it's neck. The retired couple just lost their minds in HORROR as their child (poodle) had just been killed in front of their eyes.

Indoor/outdoor cats and smallish dogs are easy prey for a coyote, keep some kind of rifle by the front and back door. With a lung shot from a 22 Long rifle standard velocity, the coyote will expire from 50-150 yards as a rule.

Somewhat agree double lung yes, single lung can run over a mile,I know from experience as back in the day learning, coyotes are tough I wouldn't shoot a coyote in one lung unless there was snow it's unlikely you'd recover it.

I had two rifles built about 6 months a part. Ist rifle was a 6MM AI with 1 - 14 twist and shoot Sierra Blitzking 55 gr at over 4250 fps and hold on fur out to 450 yds. The 2nd is a 22-6MM AI with 1 - 14 twist and shooting Sierra Blitzking 50gr at 4325 fps and hold on fur at 480 yds. I grap the 22-6MM AI all the time. They both shoot equally as well.

You can't go wrong with either caliber. If you want a true hotrod, that takes the guess work how far it is. They are both Coyote nightmares. I can have any caliber built, if there was a faster more accurate caliber I would have it built.

I have taken coyotes from 10 to 462 yards with everything from a 12ga. to a 30-06 with 110 Vmax. Killed a bunch with an SKS 7.62x39 but my go to after seeing some splashes and spinners with 50-55 Vmax in an AR became the .243 with 58 Vmax Superformance ammo. Point blank hold center of fur out to 300 yards. Bang- Flop DRT. rarely an exit wound.
22 Creedmoor

1 Less Dog is right. SPEED KILLS.
Just point and shoot. Never hold off the fur. No time to use a range finder.
