wanting to change the barrel on my 6-284. it is the stock 22'barrle on a ruger m77 sa. i am using the barnes 85gr triple x bullet but i dont want to limited to just the 85gr barnes i hope that others will have a larger lead free bullet soon for the cal. it is a hunting rifle.

thanks doug

The 6-284 really comes into it's own with a minimum 26" barrel, 8 twist, throated for the 105 and above high BC bullets.

If you shoot it with a shorter barrel and smaller bullets, you'd be just as well served with a 243/6mm case.

I would have to say that you would be best served with a 8tw or 7.5tw. The 6x284 is a powerfull 6mm that needs a heavier slug to get the most oout of it.

I was looking at an old hornady book of my dads and they listed the barrel at 26" with a 1-10 twist. I do want to go with a 28" barrel but i still looking for a good all around twist.

What I did was to pick a bullet weight/style that I wanted to shoot (hopefully). In my case it was the 87 V-Max, I called some well known Smiths & BBL makers and was told a 12 twist by most (couple said 10). Been EXTREMELY happy with the 12 twist (mine will stabilize a 95 FB SP but not a BT/ VLD @ that weight). I couldn't agree more on what ALF said about 26" bbl length IMHO GO LONG OR GO HOME with a 6-284.

Nosler makes a 90 gr E-tip which is a non lead bullet. BC of .403

Cutting edge largest 6mm mono is 88 gr BC .445

Choosing a mono bullet limits your selection

I would get at least a 26" barrel and try one of the above bullets IF you had to use a non lead bullet.

If you can use a jacketed bullet and you use this for deer don't discount the high BC 105 and 115 Berger hunting bullets. I use a 115 VLD in my 257 weatherby and it drops our coues wt with authority. A friend has used the same bullet on several elk.

Nosler's 90 gr ballistic tip gets some fantastic reviews as well. It is far tougher than most people realize.
Nosler just recently introduced a 90 gr accubond BC .376

If you go with a 115 you will need a faster twist of 1 in 7.5

You could go to 24 hr campfire or long range hunting for further questions on hunting bullets.

I'm not sure about the length of the Ruger short action but you may be limited in overall length cartridge length with the heavy VLD bullets limiting case capacity. You may be better suited with as 243 variant. It has several advantages over the 6-284 if you ask me. I wouldn't go any faster than a 1-8" twist with 6-284

i would go with an 8.5" twist to an 8" twist. but no faster than an 8". That cartridge generates a lot of stress on the bullet, so a faster twist will stress the bullet even more.

When I was getting ready to select the barrel twist for my 6/284, I had the luxery of having Fred Sinclair's wisdom to work with. His answer was very quick. He said to go to an 8" twist, and nothing less than a 26" barrel. This would make sure that I would be able to handle any bullet that I had reason to use, and the longer barrel would be the best way to go since it would allow the newer, slower, powders to be used to maximum benefit. Dan Dowling confirmed this as well, especially when he was the one who did the actual chamber cutting and barrel fitting for my rig.

to some you that may ask as to why i am interested in this is because i all ready have the gun,and it has the stock 22" barrel on it s i like the juice of it. and i like the .284 wildcats,my dad has a 25-284 and eventually i want to build the 6.5-284.

I am going to go with the 28" barrel and just need to go with the best all around twist so i can use a variety of bullets if i choose to. i just wish barne's made a heavier bullet for that caliber:(

If your going to use a magazine the 87 V Max (I also use the 88gr Bergers) seated to the base of the neck is as long as a Rem SA will go. If you single load, longer bullets can be seated out so you don't lose case capacity and the AOLs will be in the 2.9-3+ range. The Freebore will also be longer . These are all things you need to look at when decideing the use of your rig.

thanks all for the info and your opinions on what to use. I contacted Lilja and the guy at there said to use a 1-10tw for up to 100gr and use a 1-8tw for 105gr and up.

He also said that the 1-8tw would work with the lighter bullets also in the 28" length barrel.

thank you for the tips and info you all have given me.
