Best .223 REM Match Ammo Bullet Weight

Hi Everybody, I’m new to PRS type shooting and competition. I have a Thompson LRR in 6.5CM that I use Hornady ELD Match cartridges in (I have no place to reload). I recently got a Savage/MDT Elite Precision in .223 REM. I’m trying to figure out what bullet weight rounds in .223 will most closely look/feel/resemble the LRR when shooting. I’ll most likely use a cheaper match ammo, but I’m lost as far as choosing between weights from 55gr to 90gr. What’s your experience/opinion?

If shooting in PRS Tactical you can not use any bullet weight over 77grns. I shoot 75 ELD-M in my .223. Using AICS mags you can load longer than AR mag length but if using factory ammo then you are AR length anyways. Try some Hornady 75 BTHP Match ammo or some of the 75grn 5.56 Superformance Match if you wanted some more velocity.

I prefer 80smk in my 223rem Match bolt guns. I do use a 0.100 freebore reamer for these though. I have shot a ton of 75 ELD's as well that also shoot great

H4895 and varget provide equal accuracy with H4895 being faster

I would get a box of rem accutips, factory box. lighter bullet, but VERY VERY accurate. may not be made anymore... but it would give you an excellent lighter load to cross off your possibles for that particular rifle.

I have been happy with the AAC 75 BTHP loaded at 2700 fps (advertised velocity)….. you mentioned that you don’t reload. This stuff can be had for as little as $10/box when on sale. Only place I have seen it is Palmetto State Armory online.

We shoot Mid-Range Prone with it out to 600 yards. I use this when working with newer shooters and for practice and in club matches then reload the brass for our competition ammo with 77 SMK’s.

The quality is good on the AAC, but there will be an occasional fast or slow round (it’s Hit & Miss… pun intended). I have seen good scores with it and a few AR-Tactical matches even won with it. When you get to the point the accuracy of this stuff is holding you back, you’ll know it… very likely by then you will be reloading.
