Berger ballistics program(s)

When Berger first made a ballistics program freely available some years ago it was in a downloadable form. I tried it and found that it gave results that agreed closely with those from JBM Ballistics and also with the tables in the Sierra loading manual Vol 4, so I have continued to use it.

I tried to use it on a new computer recently and found that it would not run because Java was not installed, so being in a bit of a hurry I used the Berger on line program instead. I did not believe the results, so I got out my old laptop and tried again with the old program. I was wanting trajectory figures for the Sierra 6.5mm 130gr TMK projectiles at a muzzle velocity of 2900 fps.

The results with each program were wildly different. For example, with the old program the retained velocity at 1000 yards was 1390fps and with the on line program it was 2055fps! The same sort of thing occurred when I tried calculating the trajectory of the Sierra 308 155gr Palma MK at a muzzle velocity of 2900fps. I checked and double checked that I had entered the correct values.

Can anybody throw any light on what is happening? There is obviously something seriously amiss.

I don't think it is even supported anymore. I looked at it once and it wasn't good. I recommend you stick with JBM, it works. If you need an offline calculator, there are lots available for a smartphone. Shooter App works good and is only $10.

I have used the Berger Ballistic program exclusively and have had no problems. However, as said above, about a week ago it started to either not be available at all, or provide obviously incorrect results, and not always the same incorrect numbers.

So I contacted Berger.

Evidently, they had a website update, and that messed the ballistic program. The first time I called them they confirmed the issue, and told me that they would try to get it fixed BUT the gentleman who is responsible for this was at the Shot Show in Vegas, and it was unknown when he could get to it.

I emailed back and forth a couple of times sense then, and my understanding is that the ballistic program will be fixed this week.

BTW, the people with whom I spoke and emailed at Berger were very nice. I have not tried the program today, yet.

Thanks for posting - that clears up the mystery. For now, I'll use the off-line program, running it only on my laptop until I get Java installed and running on my new desktop machine. Or use JBM, which gives pretty much identical results.
