Berger 85.5gr in a 5.56 AR

A guy I shoot with said he didn't like these and asked if I wanted them...of course, I said yes.

I have a feeling I know why he didn't want them, these things are looong. As soon as I got home and opened them I had a feeling fitting these things in a magazine would be a problem and I was right.

I don't mind being a little compressed, but this thing has so much bullet in the case that I can't even get a CBTO measurement because the ogive is just barely in the neck lol

I'm guessing these are meant for a 224 Valkrie or something...but before I put these on the shelf of things to never be used, I was wondering if anyone has even tried these in a 223/5.56 gas gun.

Here is one next to a 77gr, it's huge

For sure. I'm just debating if I want to try to shoot a few through an AR and thought I'd check if anyone else has tried it.

They have been tried many times as a single load in AR. Some have succeeded but most I have spoken with shared my results is the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze over an 80.5 in the AR platform. Really need the throat opened up longer than Wylde chamber to get best results.

Kind of what I figured. To the shelf of unused things they go.

as said, better off in a bolt gun. I use these in my 223 PRS trainer rig that’s throated for them. Definitely requires you to modify the magazine though. Doesn’t need to be single feed if your rifle is set up for them.

I did a little load development this Spring in 2 different AR type rifles with the 85.5, h335, and elcheapo once fired brass from Scheels. They may have even been military brass because I had a h*** of a time to prime them. Anyway, the comments about extremely short OAL (mag length) is true, but both rifles shot quarter to half inch 3 shot groups at the lower end of the book powder charg. No chrono data. Never finished due to health issues.
