Berger 6.5mm 140gr Hybrid test

Tigguy,

If it makes your feel any better, I killed both of my whitetail deer this year with Berger bullets. My buck with 115g Hunting VLD from my .25-06 and my doe with a 180g Berger Hybrid in .284 Shehane.

Tigguy I have no horse in this race and fall more into your category of factory rifles that I try to get everything out of than I do with the match crowd on this site. With that being said you really need to direct your issues elsewhere. I find it hard to believe you really took this much offence to some reviews on a new bullet, or "boolets" as posted. If it wasn't for the match crowd many of the calibers we hunters use, your 6.5-284 in particular wouldn't likely exists because these guys experiment, test, and yes they spend ALOT. Berger exists because of match shooters, not hunters, case in point. Please think about what you say on this site, no one has made obviously false or disrespectful comments. How about next time you just try to get some samples for yourself, try them in a factory gun and let us know how they did so as to add to the conversation and not bring negativity into it.

kyreloader,

Nice hunting report! I'd like to hear your remarks on load development and the exit wounds. I don't care for bone and/or bullet fragments in my venison! Anyway, I feel good either way, just slightly befuddled by the apparent lack of rifle variety in this test. lol. We all should already know that all Berger bullets are built as, and are considered "match" grade, and are intended to be fired in most rifles chambered in that particular caliber. Hybrids merely change the shape of the ogive, they do not automatically make an exclusive class of target, tactical, varmint, etc. type of bullet meant only for high dollar, Williamsport type rifles, or rifles of "Match" chambers only. That's what my argument was.

+1. Sounds like lots of anger expressed following the testing posts for no good reason. Nobody put anyone down because they own or shoot a "factory rifle." Heck I've got a safe full of them. I don't hunt anymore because of physical reasons. But I still head on out to the range weekly and have fun shooting and testing ammo in my "factory rifles." And more than not, it's the Precision Shooters who've taught me finite details that help my groups get as small as I can produce which is the challenge that keeps me heading to the range these days. Some enjoy loading and testing for hunting, while others enjoy Precision Shooting. Lighten up so your blood pressure doesn't go through the roof. Life's too short as it is. Good luck to all and thanks for the posts that reflect the efforts you put into your testing of Hybrid bullets.

My emotion from the first post has been alleviated. I should have left it at the door step to begin with. Apologies to those it's due. That being said, are there any folks out there that were picked that did this test while shooting a factory, over the counter type of rifle? That's what I'd like to know.

wvuredneck,

I wasn't and didn't diss on any type of shooter. Frankly, I appreciate the fact that they can hit a gnat's hind end at unGodly ranges and can afford to do it day in and day out. I didn't learn about Berger bullets from any kind of competition or from any competitor, although I'm grateful for what they've apparently done. Sierra comes to my mind when thinking of competitions won but that's okay. I learned of Berger and their killing abilities from hunters and hunting sites. That being said, I spend plenty of money on bullets, Berger representing roughly half of my bullet budget. I'd like to know if there were any testers picked that shot factory produced rifles while doing this test. My post was edited by myself to reflect this intent.

I take/took no personal offence just wanted to make sure you understood that your post affects the perceived content of this forum which I'm sure you didn't intend to be negative, we've all been there when for some unknown reason we reach or boiling point. Just for an FYI not as a put down, if you watch the video series starting with the video link I'm posting you'll understand why i say if it wasn't for matches there would be no Berger. Its amazing to listen to Walt talk about his company and realize that is truly was his passion, not just a business idea. http://youtu.be/C3VCN1Ly81U

tigguy,
Look back at reply #2, the shooting tests were done with a factory DPMS 6.5 Creedmoor.
While I have been using it in the new IBS AR Benchrest class it is a factory rifle.

Thanks wv and james for the links and tests. It took me quite a bit of time, different bullets, and patience in getting the results I wanted and expected from my current 6.5 loads. My bullet applications require a level of pickiness that doesn't lend itself to being able to grab any ole box of components off the shelf and load away. I tend to believe what the tester presents. That doesn't always lead me to truthful conclusions. It does help me to weed out some of the hype though. Newer doesn't always automatically mean better but any improvements help me to get that little bit of tighter groups, and for that, I'm grateful.
