Berger 40gr .20 cal

Hey guys,

Does anyone know if the Berger 40gr .204 will stabilise in a 1:12 twist. Is the 40gr Berger any more accurate than the 39gr Sierra Blitzking?

Regards,

Michael.

Michael,

The 12" twist will stabilize the Berger 40 grain and it is the most accurate 20 cal bullet made,we make them so you may want to get a second opinion:)).

Regards,
Eric

In spite of Eric having a "slightly biased opinion," he speaks the truth. The Berger bullets I have shot in my Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger, especially the 35 gr. FB HP Berger, are extremely accurate.

When I tested the 40 gr. Bergers in my .204 Ruger, I think the only ones I could find were the 40 gr. LTBs. I see on Berger's Web site that the only 40 gr. .204 bullet they have is now called the 40 gr. Match bullet. I am thinking that is a different bullet than the 40 gr. LTBs I tried, but I am not sure???

Silverfox,

The 20 cal 40 gr bullet has not changed. The LTB confused shooters who were new to Berger so LTB was dropped from the description. It is still the same bullet.

Regards,
Eric

In my rifle, the 40 Bergers shoot lights out. I managed to get get a 5 shot group at 400yds at 1.48" using the 20 TAC. 1-12 twist, 28" Pac Nor. 24.6 RL-10x

hopes this helps

Four Savage 204R tubes. The first three shot 35 Bergs the best. None would shoot 40's of any make worth beans.
Screwed on # 4 and suddenly the 35's no longer shot well.
Totally confused I tried an old box of the 40 Bergers I had kicking around. Bingo.YMMV
I've found the easiest way to eliminate or at least reduce fliers in the 204 is to load out of a yellow box.
My first three tubes would not shoot Sierras, 32's or 39's. Turned em to dust. #4 will, I've yet to determine if they can out shoot the 40 Bergs. It won't be easy.
QC is much better on the Bergs.

Your altitude will have something to do with if they will stabilize or not. At sea level the Beger 40's will not stabilize in my 12 twist, but at 5,000' ASL they do.

I have a 12 twist CZ that shoots fantastically with the 40 Berger BT or the 40 VMAX. The 39 gr Sierra's are close, but not quite as good.

SDH,

Can you give me the particulars of your load? We figure twist rates using Army Standard Metro which is at sea level so they should work just fine. You might double check your twist rate using a cleaning rod just to make sure that you have a 12" twist. If you want instructions on how to do this let me know as it is a quick and easy way to confirm twist rates of a barrel.

Eric

just got hold of some 35 bergers for my tac20 initial testing with h322 shows these may be more accurate than the 40 bergers .will keep posting results

The 40 gr. Bergers stabilized OK in my Savage 12VLP with its factory 1 in 12" twist barrel and the elevation here is 1,850 ft.

Guys,

Many thanks for your input on this. I ordered a box of 35gr and a box of 40gr Berger's to try in my rifle.

Regards,

Michael.

i have shot the berger 50 grainer in a 20 br an it to is very accurate in a 1&9 twist and i can shoot the 40 grainers too.

So far Berger's 35 gr Match HP with 26 gr of H322 works best in my Cooper 21 Varmint Extreme 20 Tactical, 24" SSteel, 1-12" twist. I've had 5 shot groups down to 0.23 MOA, averaging arount 0.38. Day to day, this load is the most consistant in location and size of group. Velocity is just over 4000 fps.

I Have a few 20s and The 40s will NOT shoot out of my 20-250 with a 1 in 9 twist At 100 yards I am lucky to hit a 4X4 sheet of plywood 50s shoot great In my sava 35s shoot great 40s wont shoot I can keep on a 4X4 sheet of plywood but not good In a TC 204 It loves the 40grns the best In 20 classic 1 in 12 it also loves the 40 grn pills I have killed 1 coyote at 520 yards 1 shot with the classic and lots of ground squirls I Love the 40 grn berger for coyotes just wish all my 20s liked them. In my 20 ackly hornet it will shoot them well but I prefer the 30s in the little case,
So Just shoot some with diffrent powders and see if your gun will shoot them If it dos I am sure you will like them
Good Luck Kevin

I look forward to trying the 40 grain bergers in my 12 twist Savage 12FV barrel. The 35 grainers are just stunning in that gun with Benchmark and br-4 primers. Can't believe the way they are shooting at 300 yards. Recently won an informal shoot against guys shooting 6mm br out of custom barrels, and I haven't even bedded the action yet. Would be hard to beat the 35's, but if anything would, I guess it would be the berger 40.

Eric ain't joking, see my thread in this same forum category, I am getting excellent results from the 40 Bergers thus far and have tested 32 V-max, 40 B-tips, 39 Blitzkings & 40 V-max.

Thus far the rank is:

1. Berger 40 grain

2 Sierra 39 grain Blitzking

3 Hornady 40 grain V-Max,may move to second with work)

4 Hornady 32 grain V-Max

5 Nosler 40 grain B-Tip

agree with you on the 40 berger shoots like a laser in my tac20 with rel10,

BUT the 35 bergers with 24.7gns h322 shoot even better slight jam and they will when i do my part shoot into the .2s[5 shots]'100yds,this is off a bipod and rear bag.i have a best 3 shot of.108.

Geno,
What loads are you shooting with those Bergers 40's?
My CZ shoots lights out with that 32 grain V-max, but my Remington has some more work to do it. I honestly have not played too much with bullets as I have with powder and cases, so any shortcuts you can toss my way would be very helpful.
