Berger .204 35gr HPFB - what is the longest distance anyone has successfully shot these to?

Greetings,

I think I have finally found the load my Kimber likes. 35gr Berger HPFB and 28.2grs H4895 in Sellier & Bellot brass, sparked off by a Federal 205 primer.

I managed to shoot a 3 shot group of just over 1/4 inch. I didn't get a chance to chronograph them, but it should be in the neighbourhood of 4000fps. My Kimber has a fast barrel and I am getting around 150fps more velocity over Hodgon ballistics in a 24 inch barrel with the same exact load.

Can someone tell me what the furtherest range is that they have successfully scored varmints with, as the BC looks quite low at .191.

Regards,

Michael.

Longest shot I have made on a coyote with the 35 gr. FBHP Bergers out of my Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger was roughly 285 yards. I am a coyote caller, so most of my shots are in the 100 to 200 yard range. The load I use has the 35 gr. Bergers going considerably faster than 4,000 fps and even with the low BC and the rifle sighted in for 1" high at 100 yards, I can hold dead on from the end of the muzzle on out to about 210 or 215 yards. The bullet does start to drop off fast after that. Wind deflection is manageable if you are a good wind speed reader, know the distance of your shot and how much wind deflection will take place. Again, once you get out to 200 yards with these bullets, the wind really makes the shots very tricky.

Here's a target that I used after getting the scope adjusted at 50 yards so I was on paper. Shot #1, as you can see, was low and to the right. I adjusted the scope up 3 clicks and left 3 clicks and you can see the resulting 3-shot group made with my rifle from 100 yards.

I have a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40mm long range side focus scope with the 30mm tube. Here's one of my happy customers:

I am also a coyote hunter and do it a lot! The 35 grn burgers are the bullet of choise in 1 of my 204s the other prefers the 40 grn burgers.
The longest shot to date on a couote with the 35 grn burgers is 520 yards shooting a custem savage with a shepherd scope I did not get it on film but I do have 2 witnesses and a full bodie monted dog out of that deal. We drove up on 3 coyotes killin a calf after we wear dune and some docturing from the rancher the calf survived to grow and becume hamberger.

Thear are more volitol bullets out thear but the burgers are the most acuret bullets that will hold together for coyote sized game
Hope this helps
Good Hunting Kevin
