Berger 180 Hybrid or VLD Targets in Straight 284?

I’ve been shooting a 284 competitively in F Class over the past year using the Berger 180gn Targets in a 1:9 Bartlein using H4350 and have had good success with this bullet even at a mild 2740fps. Load development was fairly easy and the gun stayed in tune over the warmer and cooler months.
From my limited research it appears that more favour the Hybrid over the VLD in the 284 and it’s variants and also the 7SAUM.
I’ve ordered a batch of Hybrids for a new 8:5 twist barrel I have chambered to test for myself but was curious if others may have compared these two bullets and what did you find? Accuracy wise, ease of tune...

Cheers Rushty

EDIT: I’ve also heard it said that the Hybrids will perform better in a certain wind conditions eg- head winds.. anyone know if there’s any truth to this??

Any 180 grain bullet will work as long as it's a 180 Hybrid. :-p

Hey Rushty, I've dabbled with the Hybrids in my 280AI running ADI2217. Couldn't tell you definitively whether they were better than VLDs, but they didn't seem to be any worse based on the load I tried. Didn't try jamming them like the VLDs, jumped them about 10thou and managed a 60 with something, but the X-count wasn't huge. I'm sure further load development would show improvement but I was too far into the barrel life to bother. A couple of friends running 284s over in NSW are running VLDs so I can't offer too much more advice on them. Rod Davies ran 180 hybrids in his WC winning 7SAUM (neck turned) behind H4350...

I have shot a lot of both the VLDs and the Hybrids. I think the VLD actually has a slight edge in accuracy but the seating depth is more sensitive than the Hybrid. The Hybrid has a wider seating depth window and is more forgiving and for that reason I would give the nod to the Hybrid. But if you can't find Hybrids don't be afraid of the VLDs - they are both great bullets.
