Berger 105 VLD

I've been shooting the Berger 105 VLD bullets trying to work up a load in my 6mmBR. Just trying something different than the SMK 107's. The first load that has shown promise is 30.0 Varget with the F205M. The bullet was seated .030" in the lands and produced a .820" triangle at 330 yards. Now I know .820" at 330 yards isn’t squat. Until now, all loads have been double grouping. My question is this, how many of the shooters here are that far in the lands or farther with the same bullet?

Thanks

That's a right smart of jam!!! I have not ever used that much jam
into the lands. .005 to .010 is about as much as I have ever used. I have a similar caliber called a 6 X 47 Shehane which is a necked down 6.5 X 47 Lapua with the shoulders blown forward and with the 105 VLDs touching the lands I was able to get a .991 at 500 yds. a little over a week ago. Have you tried to back the bullets off from the lands at all? Some reports suggest that some rifles even shoot the VLDs better seated off the lands .005 to .010. Bill

When I started with the 105's I was at -.010" from a max jam, somewhere around .015" to .020" in the Lands. I've even tried just touching the lands to no evail. I'll shoot it again tomorrow with 30.3 and 30.6 grains of Varget. .030" in the lands just might be seating the bullets a little further when I close the bolt.

.820 at 300 yards is VERY good ..... it is equal to a .236-MOA and is nothing to sneeze at!!!!

Happy Shooting

Thanks Donovan
You know how it is, you always whant something a little tighter :)

I use 30.5 grains of Varget/CCI450 .015-.020 into the lands with the 105 VLD. Same powder charge etc. with the 108's about .010-.015 into the lands.
Try the CCI 450's and watch your E.S. drop. Mines in the single digits.

Shot them again this morning, 30.3 & 30.6 grains of Varget with the F205M's but only .020" in the lands. No wind, good conditions, bad groups, not good at all. FWIW, .030" is not seating the bullets deeper in the case and they come out of the throat just fine.

Try some RL-15 with the 105 Berger jammed at least .020 and those Russian Small Rifle Mag primers if you can find them. This load will surprise you if your rifle likes it..... 29.5 is a good starting weight, and most will take 31.0 with out a problem...

Some barrels are fairly tight. 30.5 RL15 is the most RL15 my barrel can handle. There are also lot to lot differences of course. Just want folks to understand that if they can't operate with 31.0 or near that, there isn't necessarily anything "wrong".

I've been shooting the 107 SMK's with either RL-15 or VVN140 and the F205M's. I just wanted to try something different. The rifle has a little over 1,700 rounds through it now and the throat has moved about .015". My go to load was 30.8 of RL-15 / VVN140, F205M's and the 107's seated about .005" shorter than a soft seat. This load would shoot in the mid to high .2's. I've since changed FL dies to a small base Redding Bushing Die. With the throat also moving out I guess my load changed a little. Shot this morning and found that 30.2 of VVN140 and the F205M's would produce a .235" group at 100 yards and 30.4 of RL-15 produced a .311" at 100 yards, all of this with over 1,700 rounds down the barrel, gotta love the 6BR :D . The Berger 105's .020" in the L&G's with 30.5 of Varget and the CCI450's didn’t shoot, again :).

I just finished loading some 87gr. Hornadys in a 25-06 this afternoon and was really surprized when I checked the COL as compared to the comparator length on these bullets. I was seating 0.010 into the lands and saw a difference of up to 0.015 in difference in the COL. The noses weren't appreciably damaged to be noticed but they sure varied. If makes me think that even this close to the lands it's possible to have some individual bullets with poor tolerances that wouldn't even touch the lands when seated this deep. It makes one open their eyes.

The COL of a cartridge is a moot point unless one is loading for magazine length.
