Benchrest vs boat.

It depends on the Boat.
A 16 foot aluminum buddy boat with a small hand tiller outboard, shuck as this, it’s not much more than a first class Benchrest Rifle with high end optics.

But………a guy that live down the street from me just bought a new Bay Boat, two 300 HP Yamaha 4-stroke outboards. That’s $60,000 worth of motors right there. He also bought a one ton fifth wheel to haul it on the 6 wheel trailer. I figure he has $180,000 in the whole package.

Of course, the minute YOU crank it up, it depreciates 30%.

I am sure everybody knows the saying…..”the second happiest day of your life is when you take your new boat out for the first time, and the happiest day is the day you sell it”.

I ran a 24 foot Sea Ray hard top deep V each summer out on Nea Bay for 10 years. It was one of the best experiences we’ve had during our 43 years together.
Hard to put a price on that.

Can you afford both? What one do you spend more money on.

;]
I kick myself in the nuts with how much money I spent on my guns and supplies
When I realized I could have bought a '69 Mach1 or a '68 Firebird
(More as an investment)
Thats when I began saying to myself
"You have enough guns, you have enough guns"
Guns / Muscle cars, it's a tough choice ya know? Both are money pits
that you never hardly get out of it what you put into it.
It's tough to decide which one I get more enjoyment from
A car that would likely hardly ever get driven for fear of a wreck from an idiot driver
Or guns which you can take out and enjoy whenever as often as you want.
Guns and Ammo have won over the years more than Cool Cars
--------------------------------------------------------------
Now I'm focusing more on retirement, and tell myself
You can spend all you want on your guns when you retire
It's a self discipline thing
Once I have one, I can't stop, and need another, and another.
Especially when you come across a deal you just can't pass up
I think' I've done well though only buying 2 more guns in the past 5 years

My advice. Buy a CLEAN used boat.
I bought a 22ft. Starcraft Holiday Cruiser w/305 Chevy I/O for $6000 in the mid 80s from my boss and it was like new. Sold it about 10 years ago when the wife's health took a turn and we didn't use it much. I asked a ridiculous price and he couldn't get the money out fast enough.

I had a 69 gTx that I bought new. Just sold it 2 years ago. No # matching for me. KB TF crank, Areas pistons Eagle rods, 6 pack etc. I retired at 79 years old. I miss my X sometimes.

I used to get paid to race other people's sailboats, then get paid to fix their boats after I broke things, lol! Wasn't a bad gig, but I was gone a lot. I knew better than to jump into partnership/ownership of a larger boat. I know what it cost for racing. Big races were even more. $30K for a 37' boat for 1 week of racing wasn't uncommon.

Shooting is far cheaper, but the travel still costs the same.

I learned to build boats, skiffs, from a master boat builder and built 3. Used for lobster fishing and diving. It was rewarding building them, all out of glassed plywood and apitong hardwood for the frame. Used them all then sold them. I would not buy a boat unless you plan to use it a lot. If you have the time, build one. the smallest one was 16' with a 50hp mercury and the biggest was a 20' with a 115hp mercury. All for rowing out through the surf. Launching from the beech. Back when we could do such things.

A boating friend of mine says “A boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into…”

I've had a boat of one sort or another for 43 years. I just added up what I paid for all of them.

I've grasped for accuracy from a rifle for even longer but been throwing money at it for about 33 years.

The custom builds, the "I want this" guns, SuperTricklers, Nitriding, cerakoting, smithing fees, NF's, March's, Kahles's, Shurley's, Cerus, Dima's, Bartleins Bruxs Krieger's.

Colt and USFA SAA fetish, Spanish shotgun AYA Ugartechea Garbi O/U and SxS phase and it goes on and on.

Not all BR but the BR alone surpasses my 43 yrs of boat ownership and all together guns?........not even close.

GUNS>boats

Years ago a friend of mine bought a used boat for about $30k. That first year he went out twice. He said he brought back about 300 pounds of fish.

Reality or fantasy based math can’t make that look attractive… I didn’t even ask him how much fuel he burned.
