Benchrest-class Bullet Puller

Hi Folks,
I attended a benchrest seminar 2 weeks ago and Harley Baker showed us a classy little bullet puller.
Would anybody know what it was (or might have been)?
Insert the round into a dummy chamber, 1st thumb wheel to grip the bullet, 2nd thumb wheel to pull the case away.
I neglected to ask about it. I was asking so many questions and writing notes.
He's a heck of a nice guy - BTW.

THat is a Hood bullet puller, a product of the fertile mind of Charlie Hood. Sorry to say, it is no longer produced.

Are you sure about that? http://www.benchrest.com/hoodpress/bullet_puller.html Regards JCS

That's a neat little tool 8)

It says you can even pull bullets and reseat them without resizing. Do you guys think that is prident? Seams like you would have less neck tension after. :) I am not being skeptical of the claim I just haven't tried it myself with my forster bullet puller and am a little nervous about trying it.

Thanks gmorganal,
The one I saw at the seminar did not involve the Davidson puller (plier-like thing).
It was roughly the size and shape of a pack of cigarettes or even smaller.

Okay, okay...what am I missing here :D??!! Why is there not any interest in just using a Lyman inertia bullet puller??

Those are for cave men, lol. I guess that's why I use one :p

I have a cam lock 7/8" die style bullet puller for mass amounts of varmint ammo where I don't really care if I damage the bullet jackets a little bit.

When I need to pull bullets from calibers I use for serious big game hunting or competition, I use the RCBS inertia puller with the appropriate reloading press shell holder in place of the compression ring to hold the brass. Brass comes out unscathed and bullets are in perfect shape.

The picture in the URL above was Charlie's first model, and later he made a piece to replace the Davidson puller with a knob that tightened the hole in the piece around the bullet just above the case mouth. Works well until the neck tension gets up there, and then you have to tighten the knob with a pair of pliers to get enough grip.

IMHO, ain't no better overall bullet puller than the Hornady Cam Lock device for a safe and easy way to pull bullets. I've used mine hundreds of time across a wide range of calibers including the larger calibers (and older military ammo) which can be tough at times to pull out. I've given those inertia banging devices away that had to have been designed by frustrated carpenters looking for work...(just kidding).

if you shoot at a match, things can go wrong. at the worst times. you are in a hurry and look down and whaaaaaaaaaa. no primer [or primers]
now do you want to pull your die out that has been set [very very carefully] to install a camlock?

and then reinstall the die and set it up perfectly?

every now and then at a match you will hear some whacks as bullets get pulled. but you need to find something to whack on since you dont want to pound on your loading table. especially if other shooters share the table, you might not be popular for a while if you do.

charlie had a jewel for pulling one or two bullets.

I try to be extra careful when loading so I don't have to pull a bunch of bullets.

When I do, a Hornady Cam Lock does the job. Only owned one inertial bullet puller in my life. Used it one day and when I gave it a "smack", the handle went one way with the head going another. Last one I'll ever own.

The Honady collets probably do less damage than the puller depicted in the link if you adjust them properly.

I just use the Davidson bullet grip. Insert the cartridge into the shellholder of the press, raise the ram, grip the bullet, lower the ram.

Voila - bullet is pulled - undamaged - and powder can be dumped back into its proper container.

The one thing you have to keep in mind when you use a bullet puller that grips the bullet for pulling is that it is going to change the dimensions of the bullet. A bullet that is made of lead with or without a copper coating is pretty soft and that grip is going to squeeze the bullet like a bag of soft dough and when the lead moves it changes the overall shape of the bullet plus the bearing surface length of the bullet will likely increase. Whether this affects your shooting depends on the type of reloading/shooting you do.

I usually only use pulled bullets for fouling.
