Bench vise upgrade

I a currently using a 4 inch wide Record vice from Lowes/Home Depot. I am looking for somethin in the 5 or 6 inch size and better quality. Budget would be couple ben franklins...what would you recommend. Thanks

Vices can get very expensive. Especially the bullet vices. Wilton is a reasonably priced option. Not the bullet vice but the regular vice.

I bought this Yost a while back. It’s a pretty decent vice for the money.

I think just about any bench vice in this price range is a Chinese product.

That's the same thing as the Shop Fox vise you can get from Grizzly for 49 bucks. I've got one, it works pretty good for small things.

They also sell a set of soft jaws that fit it, works pretty good, I use it on my knifemaking bench.

What is your reason for wanting a 5” vise? There are a lot of good 4” vintage vises in your price range, but going to 5” increases the price substantially. I would recommend the following: Reed, Parker, Columbian, or Wilton. You are not likely to find a good Wilton in your price range, but they do pop up from time to time. I am partial to the Parker 974 vise. I’ve owned 4 of them. They have a swivel base and weight around 74 lb. I also have the 6” versions. It’s a 976. I believe it weighs around 150 lb.

that I have "too much vise"
At the time I was looking for a large Wilton
Even considered a blacksmith post vise
I do a lot of various things, welding, pressing, grinding, beating etc
and this large 8 inch jaw with 12 inch opening
Was the best tool I found to fit the job
Much cheaper than a Wilton who want over $1000
