Bench Source Annealing and 308 brass

Paul,
Tempiaq inside the case neck can be problematic and not a real good indicator, it can turn to a grey/black gritty substance depending on how the flame is directed.
Try putting 475 deg F Tempilaq about 1/4 inch below the neck/shoulder junction and heat the case neck watching the Tempilaq until it melts. It's a good indicator that by the time this section of the case gets to 475 (and you can see the templiaq melt) that the case neck is at the higher temp required for annealing. Stop at this point before the heat travels further down the body.
I use between 6 and 7 seconds to anneal my 308 Lapua brass.

+1 on what Martin has said, using this method, I get a very accurate melt point down the case (I stand the cases side by side and compare when setting up...I keep 3 cases as constant reference points).

Personally I don't get too hung up on getting it to the "right temperature"...consistency is king....(so long as the case is safe)

Using the method Martin has desciribed I have shot my most consistent (and smallest) groups at 200yrds and my seating depth is within +- .002", with much less effort.

Watched your video, it was very nicley done and informative, I was disapointed that thre was no narative, I was so looking forward to hearing that accent again! I was born in Norfolk too but moved to the USA 25 years ago.

If you use 4 1/4 sec for .308, what about 6BR? Same time, or a little less? 6BR is a little smaller (less mass), but the wall thickness of the Lapua 6BR brass is at least as much as the .308 brass.

Thanks,

Randy
Less mass, Good observation. Be carefull. You cannot use the same heat, time duration as you do with longer cases. Its tricky to anneal shoulder body junction on these cases without over heating case head. Use 750 tempilaq on inside of neck and 350 on body (case head) If you turn flame down (blue flame tip just touching neck shoulder ) You can leave it in for about 3.8 4.2 sec. The second the 750 turns (black clear whatever) pull it out. Trust the tempilaq. When the cases are dropped out. Make sure there in an open pan, so they will cool down rapidly. Not in a narrow container where they will retain heat for a long period of time. (Important)
