Bench Plans

I'd like to build a wooden shooting bench in the shape below. The shooter sits in the center on a stool not touching the bench & can shoot from the left or right side. I've looked for plans but can find none for this type bench. Can you guys provide a source for plans? Thanks as always.

I'm not a carpenter but putting a frame under it, some corner bracing, Lagbolt, SCREW and glue. You can double 2x4s instead of a 4x4. Remember the rigidity offered w triangulation. Orrrr use 2x6 on outside and snuggle a 2x4 on the inside. Yer not bldg a piano.

Thanks for the post. Your rigidity statement is well taken. I've looked at a bunch of plans on the home page & google but I've found nothing for this type bench. A friend called it a handicap bench but a search brings up zero.

Well you have the basic plan. It just remains to figure out the bracing and leg placement to make it steady. Probably a good idea to splay the legs out a few degrees for stability.

That is a nice looking shooting bench.

Not sure of the dimensions of your design. My local club has a few similar to that and if you are a semi-large human ( in my case 6'3 290ish ) they are a serious PITA to get in & out of. If you were using a stool with wheels it would help.

Ditch that plan for building center fire position benches. They have them at Mattawan and the only guy that likes them is the guy that built them. You can get more room per bench for the shooter and less room taken up by the bench with “conventional” benches.

Take a look at the Stukey Shooting bench. It can be reverse engineered and is very stable and portable. It is universal without limiting the size of the shooter. use a combination of a metal angle iron frame with a 3/4" PW top. Legs should be 1 1/4" pipe for stability and it is very portable and ambidextrous.

LAH, I know this is different than the style you want but I thought you might be open to other options. I’m prejudiced because I shoot off of the second style of bench and like it better than the u-shape. It affords more room than the u-shape while taking up less room if you are considering using more than one on a firing line. I have plans for wooden ones but on another computer. Here is the plans in concrete together with examples of both styles. You may be able to notice the lack of room on the u-shape bench as opposed to the elongated hexagon. The hexagon is 36 inches wide while the u-shape is 48 inches wide.

The U-shaped bench was suggested by a local bench shooter. He shoots free recoil & doesn't like to touch the bench so he uses a stool. Plus he is left-handed. He has built one for the local club so I'm going to go have a look see. Perhaps I'll agree with many of you & go another direction. Thanks guys for all the time you've put into this thread.
