I am curious how your local club matches assign benches to shooters?

Most draw for benches, anything else is asking for trouble.

We have a can with numbered chips. They shake it up, You reach in and draw one out when you register.
Simple.

One club, we draw chips for relay and then draw chips for benches. We rotate 4 benches after every relay. The other club I shoot at, the MD draws relay and bench ahead of time. Both seem to work.

Using an old bingo game ball spinner with the benches written on the balls use to be a big thing.
Computer draw seems to be the way now.
Smaller clubs get the lefties settled then assign as you pay to keep the relays kinda symmetric.

That is the fairest way to do it. Shooting 1st relay is usually a huge advantage because they get to shoot the best conditions of the match. They also get a good no wind zero most of the time and that is huge.

Our local matches are basically, first come, first serve. Because of this some guys will come as early as possible to get their favorite bench on relay one. On busier days I heard some guys that got stuck in the second relay not really happy about it. Going to talk to the guy that runs and matches and see what he thinks about doing some sort of draw at sign up.

We do 1st come-1st served BUT we shoot 2 relays and alternate. Therefore, 1st relay shoots the first and last relay of the day. FWIW- We have a member with little to do that has recorded the scores over several years and found there was no advantage to shooting any particular relay or bench!

We have held a 400 yard clay shoot here at the ranch for 20 years. 12 benches and sometimes 4 relays. We draw chips for bench and relay assignment in order that entries were received. There are several family members who shoot. They draw after all other shooters have drawn with me and my brother drawing the very last. We do not want any appearance of favoritism in the bench draw.
