bell and carlson benchrest makeover

Started shooting benchrest a few months ago and really enjoy it. However the stock I purchased left me wanting more (bell and carlson medalist), with a six month wait at stockade stocks I decided I would undertake revamping the medalist into a benchrest stock with a flat straight forearm rather than the tapered varmint tactical style. Here's the almost finished product. Hopefully I can get by with it for now. 20160417_153016-1.jpg 20160417_153016-1.jpg 20160417_153011-1.jpg 20160417_153002-1.jpg 20160416_112722-1.jpg

It's happened more than once that a home fabricated stock has taken home some cash.
Looks like a vast improvement in the stability department.

Yeah it wanted to rock in the bags and wouldn't track back to poa so poor man's solution was 40 bucks worth of fiberglass. Is the stockade the best bang for your buck? Or is there something better and within a modest budget?

Stockade isnt even on the list as a br stock. You did a good job coming up with a solution. As long as it tracks straight and gets your poa back in the ballpark you have done well! Now get out there and see what itll do and let us know

The rest of the stock needs work to track like it should in the rear bag. But that will be for another day, I painted it brown bc I feel like I'm polishing a turd but for the time being it's gonna have to work. What should I be looking into for an affordable stock when the money becomes available?

Watch the classifieds close. Some good deals can come through.

Lol I know Rick well I guess I could just shoot him an email. 13 lb limit shooting a savage action.
I've got one of those stocks on my only savage. I don't shoot competition so I don't need the 3" so I am thinking about just putting it in the mill and milling the forearm flat.

That would probably make a noticeable difference mine was 3/16 out of true to start with

Like that idea.

My light gun has a short range BR fiberglass stock on it. Hate the thing and could add near two lbs. to it in modifications. You are a motivator.

This may actually work out better than you expect. I have done several stocks like this using Boyds TactiCool and Thumbhole varmint stocks. I've done this for both a Savage and a Remington action You can work that forearm down to make a "lowboy" type stock and do the same on the butt stock to lower every thing to a lower center of gravity-bore line. Just get that wood rasp and git after it. Smooth it down with the sandpaper steps, apply primer, automotive candy apple hot lava and you're ready to rock.
A great job on your project.

I still need to hit it with some glazing putty and quality paint for sure. But before I do that I'm going to work over the the rest of the stock.

I'm not sure on UBR if the butt has to be angled like in short range group.
Not a lot of options out there for the savage. I've done similar to yours in the past.
Kevin Rayhill makes a nice BR stock for a savage. They come up on here occasionally. I've bought a couple from guys on here.
