Bedding, wrap Barrel vs Action

I have until now always left two high spots when clearing space for bedding in the stock. And then bed my pillars and action at the same time. This has worked well for me.

Another option I read about is to clear the stock so that the action is totally free. Then tape up the barrel infront of the action and at the fore end. The next step is to epoxy and wrap surgical tubing around the barrel and thus suspending the action.

What is your view on this?

I like the latter since it ensures the barrel is nicely centered in the stock. This is cosmetic only but i'd say both methods are technically sound.

Setting the barrel up to support the floated receiver while the bedding sets is the way I do them..
Absolutely no stress on the receiver this way....

If you are bedding a field stock that may have cast off, and a forend that is rounded, bedding to center the barrel in the barrel channel is fine.....BUT if you are bedding a stock that was designed to be shot off of sand bags, for target work, one that has a flat bottomed forend, and a butt that is in line with it, then using the barrel channel is a mistake, if you are trying to do things so that they are functionally correct. For these sorts of applications one should bed the barreled action so that it is parallel with the line of the centers of the bag tracking surfaces at the front and back of the stock, on the same line as the center line of the buttstock (as viewed from above). The forends of some stocks may be offset, but they still need to be parallel to the butt and barrel CLs. If that results in a barrel channel gap that is not even, then some work may be done on the barrel channel to correct that problem.
