Bedding Sako recoil lugs

Lucky Shooter

Gold $$ Contributor
What is the best method for bedding this recoil lug ?The front action screw into recoil lug.

This is a L46 action.

Thanks for any replies.

Do a very thorough job of degreasing, as the wood is full of oil. Sand the wood with 80 grit and apply the compound. I also bed the action at the same time. I start the screws, set it on the buttstock and push the barreled action back against the lug and snug the screws. I use painters tape on the wood that you can see and the trigger and wrap tape around the action screws. I smear a thin layer of silicone lube on the threads and on the tape for good measure. It never hurts to put one layer of tape on the bottom and sides of the lug either. I have used surgical tubing to secure the action to the stock, but I have never had an issue using the action screws either.

When the action screw goes in the bottom of the lug, I bed the bottom of the lug tight to the bottom of the mortise/pillar. Having clearance there will cause stress as the screw is tightened.

The Sakos are very sensitive to this. Make sure the lug is tight on the bottom and rear only.

I agree with this. With clearance under the lug, you must bed the barrel ahead of the receiver and I think it is better to bed under the lug. If there is a reasonable amount of bedding surface ahead of the lug, one can have clearance under it, even if the screw goes into the lug, and it will work out OK. This is the case with 98 Mausers, Ruger 77's, and P14's. If the lug is at the very front, like on the Sako, Howa, or Weatherby MKV, contact under the lug is best. WH
