Bedding Rem 700 short action

I just bedded my stock out of the box rem short action in .243. I bedded about 3" in front of the recoil lug. Now I read that some people don't bed at all in front of the lug. Since I'm new to this accuracy game I'm making mistakes and apologize for what may seem to some to be a stupid question. Should I remove the bedding from in front of the recoil lug.
I love this site and can sit and read for hours all the great stuff you knowledgeable guys are doing. Frank
