Bedding question....HELP!

Just about to bed my new F class rifle, BAT MB action, straight 1.25"/ 32" long barrel in 284 Winchester into a Precision Rifles low rider stock. My question is, as the barrel is heavy would it be a good idea to bed the first 3" of barrel in front of the action? This will take the bedding up to where the stock is at its widest. Will this affect accuracy or would it be an advantage?
Jerry.

I personally wouldn't, the MB has a lot of bedding surface.

On the other hand, you could bed under the chamber and then see if shoots to your satisfaction. If it doesn't just grind it out and shoot it again.

I usually bed the first 2" of a barrel in front of the recoil lug. It makes me feel better about supporting the barrel. I do not think it adversly affects accuracy.

I like to support the chamber, 2" ahaed of recoil lug in heavy barreled rifles, and 1" with sporter contours. Resonation is bigger problem than thermal expansion, especially with thin barrels.

i have the same action and stock but my caliber is the shehane version my barrel is also 32 inch and mine is completly free floated no bedding at all under chamber and mine shoots great .

My 1.350 32 inch Brux .284 floats for the complete length off a BAT M and never caused a problem, either do a 1/2 dozen others bedded that way..

I've wondered the same thing. Some folks say if the barrel is bedded at all, even the first inch, then its not a free floated barrel anymore.
(meaning not as prone to accuriticy)

I have'nt a clue. Maybe my hero Gordy Gritter's will chime in on this one. I'll accept what his opinion is.

This question comes up a lot ....and there is never a concensus of whether it should be done or not.....it usually runs 50 % for/ 50% against. If it were me I would not bed beyond the lug , esp. a Bat. My sole reason: This will make it a bit easier when you re-barrel ...or do a switch bbl.

If it were me, I would not bed the barrel. I have a 29 inch HV Krieger hanging off a Rem 700 LA, and it has not had any problems. I would think your BAT action is much more stout than mine.
