Bedding an adl ?

I've got a wood stocked adl Remington 700 I want to pillar bed. My question is on the front pillar that has the escutcheon how deep do I drill the enlarged hole. Do I keep the escutcheon in place and drill from the top down to the top of the escutcheon? If I enlarge the hole completely, the escutcheon will no loner fit.

To do it right, you'll need to drill the hole to 5/8th and use a pillar a bit smaller than that...
Trying to deal with the factory escutcheon is a PITA...
Trim the new pillar so it will be a exact fit length wise, and even with the wood...
Trim the rear pillar so it will be a exact fit between the trigger guard, and the action...

I was worried that might not work. My problem is that I don't have the tools to accurately trim pillars and drill holes of two different diameters. I've bedded allot of stocks but they all have had pillars installed or a bedding block.

If you can accurately measure the length of the pillars I'll do them for you for the shipping cost.
Both holes need (or should) be opened to 5/8th"........

Thanks allot preacher. I just skim bed it like I've always done but I did wrap the barrel in .020 thick tape and bed 1/2 of the barrel channel for some added strength. I will seal the rest of the barrel channel and the but stock to help reduce shrink/swell. Will see how it goes, devcon should impede movement considerably. Before I removed the old bedding it had .150 of deflection so anything I can do should help.

I would advise you not to bed any part of the barrel at all........
Float it fully, and you'll like the outcome...

Popped it out today. Has around .001 deflection when tightening and loosening the screws. It's floated to the lug, I just added the pad because there was a huge gouge in the barrel channel ahead of the lug from the previous owners botched bedding attempt. I will check it after hunting season and it's been through it's paces and see if the deflection has changed.
