Bedding a Laminated Stock

I just did a 6mmbr in a laminated stock and used the spray version of the Minwax polyurathane. I sprayed a light coat on the inletted area before I bedded the action.
After I bedded it I taped off the areas with bedding compound and sprayed several coats.
You need to remember if you spray over the bedding compound you are changing the compound to action metal fit.

From my experience you should sand the area to be bedded with coarse paper, 60-68 grit for proper adhesion. Squirrelduster is right about taping off the bedded area and sealing the inletted part of the stock. If you finish and seal the stock first you can just sand where the bedding will go, then when you are doing the bedding job you can use a q-tip with bore cleaner to wipe the excess off the stock and have a clean looking job when you are done. There is an article here on 6mmbr that is titled stress free pillar bedding that is very informative.

Sorry, I was assuming a factory laminated stock. Tunnel vision.

I agree, on a unfinished stock I would seal it first, grind out for the bedding, then touch up afterwards, if needed.

If bedding an unfinished stock you should do the bedding first then finish the stock . this aleaviates any worries about marring the finish. When i bed stocks i rough up the bedding with a gouge chisle to get a very good bond to the stock.______treeman
