Bedding a 6.5/284 Savage F-class

Hey Guys, I just got in a new Savage 6.5 / 284 F-Class rifle and am I the process of breaking it in. And got to thinking about having it bedded. I dont know how it groups yet, but was curious if it would make much difference? I know other guns Ive had bedded shoot better afterwards. Has anyone done this?

Also What bullets seem to be shooting the best out of this gun?

I really cant wait to see what this thing does. All I need now is a Sightron S3 to go on top.

Thanks in advance

Jerid

Also If anyone is interested in one of these, I got mine from Rileys Extreme Guns. He's selling them for $1025.00 plus shipping to your FFL. I can give you his number, if anyone is interested. He's also got the F-Class in 6BR and the FT-R's in 308.

A little research on this site and you will find more information about the 6.5x284 than you could possibly imagine.
I believe the Savage is a 1-8 twist so bullets such as 142gr SMK, 140gr Berger, and 139gr Lapua should ALL work great.
There is also a great article on this site about bedding your own rifle.

Good Luck

PS:
Did I mention using the "Search" feature?

Thanks, Ive seen the articles your talking about. But was more interested in info on the 12 F-class.

What has worked well in that peticular gun?

My friend has one that is not bedded and it's fantastically accurate. He killed a PD at 1563 ranged yards with it as well as two more at 1300 or so.

Thats impressive. Im just about done with break-in and have my temporary scope mounted untill my Sightron S3 comes in. So I should be able to see how it shoots this weekend.

bedding jobs I am not good at.

If you lived near Watkins Glen STP could help you out.

Mark King does work on Savages.

I am sure it would help as your reducing your variables.

I would take it too a professional as I wouldn't want to mess anything up.

BlackHawk,
I just bedded mine last week. I had only shot two different bullets out of it,142 SMK and 140 Hor A-Max). The groups for the Sierra's loosened up just a bit,to just over .3" for 5 shots at 100 yds) and the A-Max's shrunk some,to just under .25" at 100 yds). And, my bench technique still isn't all that great. So there's still work to do.
Overall though, if you read the article, "I was thinking-Ouch" from the Apr 08 issue of PS, you'll see what really needs to be done with one of these rifles concerning the rear action screw. You'll need to get a Sav Mod 40 trigger guard so you can relocate that rear screw forward about 7/16". This will also entail a new pillar as the abortion of a rear pillar, cutout to allow for trigger and bolt release) they installed isn't up to the task. I was also unimpressed with the crown as was similar in my .204 LRPV's when I got it. They've both been recrowned.
I'm not an expert at bedding, but I bedded it with Devcon myself and it turned out great. Except, I wanted to bed about the first 3" of barrel on it but that would have mud running out the side of the buick holes. I may still do it by plugging the holes with putty and doing another quick bed job. The author also stated you want to leave the rear tang of the action free floating.
They're good entry guns in my opinion with good parts. Hard to beat a decent,if somewhat long throated) barrel, stock, trigger and action for around $1,000 in this game. I just think they require a little extra TLC to fully realize they're potential.

Thanks for all the help. I have got it finished breaking it in and have shot some groups. Im really thinking not mess with it. As its shooting good now.

Im going to start a new post with range results.
