Bedding a 10/22 28" GM BBL

Got me a 28" GM bull barrel for the 10/22. Before you ask, I got it cuz its extremely quite and heavy.

When I have bedded my sporter weight 10/22s in the past I just bed the action and then the first i1.5 inches of the barrel. I float the rest. This has worked well for me in the past. However, I am worried about barrel droop with this beast hanging off of an aluminium action.

My ideas are

1. make no changes and just bed the first 1.5 inches.

2. bed extra, like 3 or 4 inches

3. bed 1.5 inches and then add a another pressure point someplace along the barrel channel

Right now it is in an old laminate fajen stock. Was thinking of giving it a whirl in this stock and experimenting, but ultimately putting it in a tony mele stock, as I don't care for the cheek piece or the brown laminate. Would be a shame to mess up one of his finely crafted stocks.

Shim the front of the barrel at the tip of the forearm. Stiff card board will tell you if it will work or not. With and without will tell the difference.

If it’s going to be a bench gun (I assume it is) I’d consider making an aluminum barrel block to bed it into, then screw the block to the stock with the barrel and receiver floated.

I would seriously consider bedding the barrel and floating the action. Or a bedding block in the middle of the barrel. Just what comes to mind.:D:D

A local gunsmith has rebarreled a “bunch” of (technical term for “I don’t know how many exactly) rimfires with barrel blocks that seem to be popular with the local/informal shooters. With a well mounted and bedded barrel/receiver relationship, a block should remove all stress. Then the only factors should be ammo, trigger, barrel quality, rest, technique, wind reading.....:p

That was suggested to me when I asked this question at RFC. I have never made an aluminum bedding block or floated the action etc. I'm fairly handy so I might be able to do it, but it is a little out of my comfort zone.
