Bearing Surface

I have never seen any caliper attachment work as good as Mark Kings comparator. Most of the caliper ones I saw when you did it 3 times you had 3 different measurements. Matt

Practice, practice, practice :-)

Thanks Gents. The other day I tried the way Zipollini recommends and did not find my measurements completely repeatable. I will give Mark King a call and order one with inserts for a few calibers.

Good Shooting

Rich, With the set up Mark sells it takes you out of the deal the spring tension of the indicator is the same every time. It is the same set up Tubb use to sell both are made by the same guy…… jim

Here is the problem with the Tubb and Sinclair units.

1. I purchased one of the Sinclair comparators which came with the 6mm (.243in.) 6XC insert. Nicely finished but unfortunately it didn't fit the ogive of either end of the bullet - http://www.sinclairintl.com/reloading-equipment/measuring-tools/bullet-comparator-inserts/bullet-comparator-prod40165.aspx

2. Then purchased the Tubb inserts for 6XC and neither the top or bottom inserts fit the ogive of either end of the bullets. They didn't even match themselves. Also the top insert did not fit the shaft of the dial indicator very well.

3. I purchased the 6mm inserts from Hornady and they both matched the ogive of both ends of the bullets and matched each other. I can use them with the Sinclair and Tubb comparator base but feel they are just slower that way.

4. The angle of the dial indicators of all the comparators (Sinclair, Tubb, King, etc.) makes them somewhat hard to read when sitting on a table. For me they are a lot slower than the caliper method and no more accurate and a hell of a lot more expensive. To each there own I guess :-)

My buddy put a 4 digit Mititoyo dial indicator on his and it repeats to 1 ten thousandths every time. He even put on a cable attachment where all you do is push a button on the end of the cable and it lifts and holds the dial stem up for you to sit the bullet in. Now you release the cable and the stem goes down and measures the bullet. Big digits on the Dial indicator and very easy to read. Very fast and easy. The Pieces fit all the bullets I tried and repeat. All you do is sit the bullet in point down and let the stem down with its piece attached. I tried every other attachment and even a gizzy and they don't repeat. The gizzy was the worst. Matt

Matt is right you have to put the bullet point down, i have both and both work the same……. excellent. I did modify one to do point up and it is set up to measure loaded round seating depth, i can measure it with in a .0005. With a caliper and the davision or what ever you use with a caliper you are subject to feel and it is an other variable …….. jim

Once sorting for bearing surface is done do you sort by weight or any other variable?

Good Shooting.

I have the Hornady comparator, hate it. But I love the Davidson base and nose pieces sold by Sinclair. The ogive fit is right on and repeatable. For bearing surface measurements I use two of the same caliber nosepieces.

I measure and sit each bullet in a plastic cup marked with the BS. Keep the largest pile with same or close measurements for match wotk. Save those .003 thou or more either side for sighters.

No, the BS or bearing surface is the total area on the side of the bullet that contacts the bore,BTO or base to ogive is the measurement of the bullet from its base to the ogive or the area that first contacts the rifling.

I never used John's but i would bet it is as good or better than most others. It looks the same …….. jim

Just FYI here for those following this thread. I called Mark King yesterday and ordered one of his gauges. He is all out but will have some ready to ship in a month or so. Great to deal with.

Good Shooting

Thanks!! Beats trying to use two comparators and comparator bodies on a caliper :)
